I don’t like that you can’t put a carbon filter, these filters don’t do much for helping to keep the water clear and clean. I have two, one in my fish tank and one in my snake’s water bin. Really good for keeping it circulating. I got this one specifically for my snake’s water bin and the water still gets slimy. I’m going to have to switch back to my old filter which he tips over all the time. But that old filter keeps the water from getting gross.

I’m fairly impressed. This little filter is better than expected. I’m sure it would do well in a 5 gallon tank.
I’m using this in a 20 gallon long for extra water movement. Having a sponge over the impeller helps a lot as I used to use small fountain/pond pumps in the same way. The problem with pond pumps is you have to cover them with your own sponge (which looks horrible) or clean them every few days/weeks (depending on plants and stocking). This filter looks good, its quiet, has a long cord doesnt take up much room at all!
The only con so far in my opinion would be the sponge itself. It’s a bit small to hold much beneficial bacteria.
In the video you can see I have it upside down, works pretty well as a surface skimmer 🙂

It’s cheap and small, so I wasn’t expecting much for my 2 gallon setup, but I think it’ll do great! I’ve got it in a little .5 gallon tank for now, just to cycle through with my plants and moss balls, until I get it all set up tomorrow. But it’s doing fantastic so far, keeping the water crystal clear. I plan on including some charcoal soon, just to give it an extra boost, and maybe slow it down a little, because it’s got a very strong flow, even on the lowest setting. But I’m not complaining, I can always add more media to slow it down. I’m very impressed, and excited to get it all set up!!

Worked great for 3 days then started shooting out random and frequent surges of bubbles. I turned it off and restarted it but still it kept shooting out bubble surges. I moved the air intake tube but that didn’t help…I removed and rinsed the sponge filter but that didn’t help either. As I’m using it in a pico saltwater tank with corals and sexy shrimp, I had to remove it as the bubbles can potentially harm the corals. Also, today they doubled the price from just over $8 when I bought it, to more than $16…don’t know if that is an error they will correct…no way this little pump is worth over $16!!!!

This is a pretty solid filter that’s small and will fit in almost any aquarium. It serves its purpose, but there are a few downsides. Number 1, its incredibly powerful, even when the green notch is all the way to the left. It would throw my vieltail betta fish around in his 5 gallon tank. To get around this, I added some lava rocks around the filter so the water isn’t thrown around like a vortex.
Number 2, the suction power isn’t the greatest. Took a while for the top two suction cups to stick onto the glass. To get around this, I just placed a few lava rocks on the bottom which supports it up. But for the price, I honestly can’t complain.
Cleaned my water (I used aquarium sand + fluval stratum) in less than an hour, so very impressed in that sense. Overall, great little filter, seems to be doing fine, plenty of power and does what its supposed to. I recommend.

I read a lot of review saying it was too loud or too powerful, however, I bought this item for my 5-gallon betta tank and it works beautifully. I had to turn the output so that it flows on the side of the tank. It’s really easy to clean as I had to add my sponge filters along with a Little sack of activated carbon in from my old tetra whisper. This product is cheaper is very quiet fully submerged and FYI I did not connect the air hose. I would recommend this. I have place it in the tank not long and so far nothing has broken. Let’s hope it stays that way

Got this to add a bit of flow to the end of my 20gal long. The low flow and the directional output were exactly what I was looking for and it worked great, for one night. The suction cups are tiny and weren’t strong enough to keep the pump stuck to the glass. I would clean the glass and reseat it in the morning and by the evening it would come loose, which makes the whole filter basically unusable.

Originally bought a Tetra filter for my small tank as the reviews for it were pretty good. I wanted silent. Hooked it up and it was so loud. After a few back and forth with the company I sent it back and went for this filter instead. Some say it is loud WELL not mine. This little guy has power and completely silent. If it wasn’t for a plant in front of the flow moving it I’d think the filter was dead. Amazing. Great flow control as well and simple to clean. Will buy this brand again if I happen to get another small tank. Problems solved hunting down a quiet filter.

Have had this filter in my 5 gallon betta tank since the beginning of January 2023 and it’s be working great! The suction cups can be annoying and the filter will slide down from time to time, but that isn’t a major issue for me. I really like that it opens so that you can put your own filter media in if you want, I definitely recommend this filter!

Important note for anyone with a betta. The outflow is pretty strong, but if you point it towards a corner of the tank or upwards your betta shouldn’t have a problem with the current. I have a betta with obnoxiously long fins and he doesn’t have a problem with the current as long as the filter is pointed towards the corner of the tank.

I am impressed!!. I bought this to replace a filter I had on a Walmart 19.99 1.5 gal acrylic tank. The one I had kept spraying water out the back near my plugs and it had to go. This was what I was hoping a cheap fix, however I had my doubts. For a little cheap filter it is amazing. I left it in the small tank for a month. I have a tetra and 2 snails in my tank and already concerned about the bio-load. I did a few water changes using a turkey baster but did not touch the filter. It continuously kept a strong flow and now after a month I figured it is time to pull the filter and clean it out. Not bad at all which tells me I probably can push it a little more as far as occupants in my tank. Do not underestimate this little pump, it is a beast for its size. I only have one complaint. Trying to snap this thing back together after you clean it can be a challenge. I have no patients and was afraid I was going to break it. Other than that I would definitely recommend this filter for a small tank.

I had originally purchased this for a nano tank and was impressed with how much water it was able to move. It was able to clear up my tank very quickly, and was fairly quiet overall. The filter has a small venturi port at the top and comes with an attachment to extend the port opening to be above the water line. Taking the filter apart to change out the sponge was easy and it has an adjustable flow lever on the side of the unit that allows you to adjust the flow to your needs.
Although the filter was very impressive for the price and size, it does not come without its negatives.
1) Though not necessarily a negative as this is relative to the size of your tank, the filter is powerful – much too powerful for my smaller nano tank that was 2.5 gallons, even on the lowest flow setting! I would recommend this filter for tanks of 4-10 gallons or long tanks where the flow has more distance to disperse.
2) The suction cups on the unit are very weak. I found myself having to stick the filter on the glass again ever 3-4 days as it would constantly lose suction to the glass.
3) The venturi port, though nice, was inconsistent for me. As you get obstructions in the outflow, the venturi effect eventually stopped and instead of drawing air in, it started to spit water out the top. You have to be careful with the placement of the air hose in this case as to make sure that if this does happen, the water will not spray out onto your floors. I opted instead to just not use the port for air and added an airstone instead.
Overall, I think this Penn-Plax filter is great for the price. It has a very powerful pump that moves plenty of water, and effectively filters the water. There are issues with things like the suction cup mount constantly losing suction to the glass or the venturi air tube having the opposite effect and spraying water out instead of intaking air. If you don’t mind just having the filter hang by the power cord or opt not to use the venturi air tube, these aren’t really issues. Just make sure to have a large enough tank to contain all that power!
