First, I rarely write reviews unless something really blows my expectations. That said, I have a 55 gallon tank that has been nothing but problems for these two beauties as they have grown up. I have always sworn by my double Fluval U4’s in all of my other tanks(7) and was just beside myself that they could not keep up with these 2. Problems with Fuvals are – they work great until they don’t. They are harder and harder to get parts and media for, and they don’t work well for filthy fish.
Oscars are notorious for thier waste alone, then add in thier tankmates, and a couple kids love for over feeding , and live food- ugh.
I got this additional filter because I just could not stand dealing with the smelly water, the constant milky state- the endless water change and testing- but never quite getting “there”.
    Wow am I impressed.
It arrived yesterday. I immediately took another posters advice and used a flathead screwdriver to help with opening it. Quickly soaked everything – more from experience then anything ( always get submersibles wet before plugging in)
Plugged it in adjusted spraybar and went to bed.
Woke up this morning and the tank- a mere 6 hours later – is CRYSTAL CLEAR.
    Amazing.
It is completely quiet. You can adjust the output to be rain like, full throttle , or just kind of like a hose wherever you place it – depending on the output attachment you choose.
For cleaning, you unplug, detach each section and rinse clean – do not throw away media.
    Easy – simple- wonderful.
Will definitely buy several more to have on hand as emergency filters and replacements for burnouts.

I love this filter because it’s powerful and there are not super expensive internal filters that you need to replace. There is a sponge inside that lasts for at least a month and a carbon filter that is easy to rinse out and also lasts longer than other filters I have bought. It’s easy to put together and is not noisy at all as it’s completely submerged. I will buy it again when I upgrade my tank. Great purchase!!

    Let’s start this very simple.
This is a top tier filter for 40 dollars ,heck, I’d pay 60 on a bad day. Out of the box it is quiet and effective. Very easy to clean once it’s disassembled.

After 5 years: it opens easier for sure.
I’ve recommended this filter to everyone I know. I came back to this page to purchase two new ones. Not because my original quit functioning but because it’s a little loud after being in a sand/silt bottom tank for 5 years. I will retire this one to my plant tank as it is still a great filter but would be horribly loud for a pet to live next to.

    More details about it’s life:
I’ve abused this filter. It’s been overloaded, underwatered, at one point my tank cracked and it ran dry for 3 days while I was on vacation. (one year in) I only ran the carbon portion for about a year, it was extremely difficult to open and refill. Happy to say the filter works great without it. The internal construction is simple and easy to clean making upkeep a dream, just pop the head off and fill your sink with water. Turn the filter on and swish it around.
At one point I used the top portion as a pump to do water changes. Just fit some clear tubing on and into a bucket. It is very versatile even in ways it wasn’t meant to be.

This filter has had a long long life and has proven to be probably the most durable thing I’ve ever bought. Happy retirement little guy.

I read great reviews on this item and that’s why I bought it. Installing was very simple and worked great in tank for turtle. It’s a fully submersible filter and needs to stay under water which it did. Was doing normal cleaning on it like I always do and after cleaning it unplugged of course. Plugged it back in and got nothing. Return window just closed and kinda just wasted 40$ so not a good buy in my eyes unless seller reaches out to make things right.

This is more powerful than expected and has helped to clear my tank a lot faster than normal. Though I just hooked it up it already has my tank looking clearer than it has, after a cleaning, in a long time. I almost lost my cool after I hooked it up and it wouldn’t work and I realized it needed to be fully submerged. Problem is my turtle tank doesn’t have that much water in it… only about 15 gallons. However just as I was about to break it on the ground I saw a picture on the side of the box showing it laying on its side under water. So I gave it a try without the extended bar and its running great. The turtle also seems to like the strong flow of water.

I recommend this product for the fact of being very useful for people who loves aquarium live fish and keeping aquarium CLEAR and EASY to filter and clean tank without hesitation and frustrations! My personal recommendation to have a very clear tank is to used a pillow fillers which you can buy at Walmart or old pillows to effectively used as filter applications for cheap. And this product give you that modification and plus the power of water current on the surface water for aeration and pushing waste water into the filter absorption for almost 2 months! Depending on how much fish you have or how many you feed your fish that is. And you can see how the fitler sucked in waste as it’s gets dirtier to know when to changed.
