This has definitely been a useful purchase! Works great with our two nearly senior cats. They adapted pretty fast to it from their regular cat litter box and cat litter pebbles. We no longer need to put our hands in the cat litter and rake the waste out. This product does it for you. The litter tray is rather pricey as you would need to buy this particular one for use but it’s still worth it. When cleaned out regularly after 2 weeks (due to having 2 cats- could go longer with just one cat), it barely smells! The litter tends to scatter so have to use the anti-litter tracking carpet in conjunction with another longer one. The colour is as depicted.

I rated this 4 stars, but that rating has to do with using the “Forever Tray” that you can also buy on Amazon instead of the disposable trays that come with this product.

I have 2 cats plus a third part-time cat that belongs to my boyfriend that comes to visit every few days. Three cats make a lot of bathroom stops and I scooped my cats’ box every day using clumping cat litter. This is fine, except I often am away for the weekend and two days is the absolute max the box can go without being cleaned. I wanted something that would auto-clean and allow me to be worry-free on weekends away.

I splurged and got the ScoopFree with the hood and kitty counter since I have cats that like to dig for hours in their box and fling cat litter everywhere. Turns out it was a good choice. It’s kind of fun in a weird way to see how many times your cats use the litter box per day. So far, the average is about 8-9x per day for 3 cats.

Setting up the ScoopFree was pretty easy. It comes in one piece, so no set up is really necessary other than setting up the disposable litter tray with the magnetic hood under the frame, putting the frame over it, and “snapping” the magnets together that hold the tray flap down. The litter comes pre-portioned so all you do is dump the bag in and smooth the litter level. Plug it in and pick your delay timer for scooping (I went with 10 mins) and away it goes.

My cats were a little wary of the new type of litter. Crystal litter is very granular compared to the more sand-like litter they had used before. After a few mins of getting used to it they were fine and used it as normal. However, they were startled the first time the litter box went off to clean. The motor is very quiet, like a dull hum, but the cats had never seen it before so they steered clear of their box for a good hour after its first clean to see what the sentient litter box would do. I was afraid they’d be too freaked out to use it again and have accidents, but after a few days of use the cats seem to have gotten used to the hum of the box cleaner, but they still run up to watch the rake sweep across the litter. 🙂 The rake very evenly distributes the litter so you do not get a pile up of litter at the back or front of the box.

So far the cats seem to love it. It provides entertainment plus a tidy box for them to do their business in. I would recommend getting the Forever Tray ($50 on Amazon) instead of the disposable trays that come with the ScoopFree. It’s expensive up front, but will save you money overall since the disposable trays don’t last too long and are $15 each. With the Forever Tray you only need to pay for crystal litter which you can get anywhere.

Odor has been a worse than with TidyCats clumping cat litter, but I do empty the poo trap every 2-3 days or so so it’s not too noticably bad unless you’re right up with your face near it.

Edit: Been using the ScoopFree system for almost 2 months now and I have some updates.

    1. This thing is smelly. I have 3 cats so I’m sure that contributes, but the crystal litter that comes with the system in refillable trays and the brand Fresh Step has for scoopable litter doesn’t hold up smell-wise for more than few days. After some experimentation I’ve noticed there are about half inch gaps on either side of the container that holds the waste. I’ve stuffed those so the smell is less, but it’s still kind of a weird design flaw.

    2. Crystal litter isn’t great with smell control. I’ve discovered that you do not have to use crystal litter with this thing. Just do NOT use clumping litter. I switched to Fresh Step non-clumping clay litter and it works much better at smell control. It also works with the machine and it’s $5 for 25lbs of the stuff vs $13 for 8lbs of crystal. The only downside I’ve noticed with “sand” litter is the sweeper in the ScoopFree does not as evenly redistribute the litter as it goes about its cleaning cycle. No big deal. The cats shift it around themselves.

    3. For 3 cats sharing one box I do a full dump of the litter every 7 days or about 70 bathroom uses. I think around 70 uses the litter is just done. I also clean the trap out every 2-3 days which is much less than my 1-2x a day it used to be before ScoopFree.

Edit 7/9/12: Been using ScoopFree for a number of months and this is my second update. I’ve experimented with clumping litter (in particular using FreshStep clumping litter) and guess what? It works and it has completely got rid of the odor problems. The only issue with using clumping litter is sometimes a little bit of the clumping litter sticks to the bottom of the pan, so every 2-3 days I scrape the bottom of the pan (this is with 3 cats using it). I empty the collection bin every 3-4 days with 3 cats using it. So yes, you can use clumping litter with this baby. With this being the case, I give this product 5 stars!

My daughter has been trying to talk me into buying a self clean litter box since she purchased one and I always said I didn’t need one. I finally caved and now wish I would have purchased months ago. There is no matter cat box smell in my house and I don’t have to deal with cleaning a litter box which in itself is time consuming, messy and well stinky. I have no more litter to sweep up regularly and the self clean is quiet, easy and super sufficient. The refills are a bit pricey but definitely worth the cost so my litter box is pretty much maintenance free. Highly recommend for every cat owner

    ———————————————————— UPDATE 2018 ——————————————————————————

It has been 7 years since we purchased our first unit. We got three years from it then it died in 2014 when motor portion got flooded with water. I replaced it with a regular unit no hood and no counter to save $20. It has been going strong for four years too. We bought a second unit when we went to Europe for two weeks to give my Mom no reason to clean a box. When we got back we packed one away because we only have one plastic tray and I won’t pay for the disposable one. But I just saw the Petsafe permanent tray! I’ll be purchasing one soon and putting both into service one for each cat and I hope that makes them happier!

    Original post 2011

I am a dog person mostly because I like a family member who bathrooms more agreeably with the rest of the family. I am also pretty much a
skeptic with hopeful tendencies now and then… sometimes. Since allowing my son to rescue a cat from shelter life (classic story of dumb human expecting cat to stop scheming to get at the caged bird and “just get along”) six years ago, then adding her “sister” a stray kitten comic who wandered into the yard a year later, the litter box has been one of the sorest points of our relationship. It even trumps homework sometimes. Most times.

I have a super sensitive smeller and HATE the smell of cat poop, cat urine, wet cat litter or that nasty get-into-fabrics cat/poop/urine/litter stench. You know the one that announces from across the street that a “cat person” is approaching. We have thankfully not come to that point. Honestly I would have to find new human parents if it did. Sorry ASPCA. I just can’t stand that smell and I am NOT going to be a cat-slave when my son “forgets” his duties.

So we were planning vacation time and the boarding of the cats for 8 days would be $500 added to the cost of the trip. No one likes to clean cat litter in our family so they don’t have cats, so I am reluctant to ask family or even friends to do us the favor. Then I had the brilliant idea to get this auto cleaner. I had the thought before but the price and the idea that it was a scam to get my money was there all the time. However I spent a good 3 hours researching online and amazon read the reviews and decided on the Ultra ScoopFree. It was $147. Even with the auto feeder Large Automatic Pet Feeder Electronic Programmable Portion Control Dog Cat Feeder w/ LCD display , rechargeable batteries Sanyo SEC-N16SETEVP NEW eneloop 1500 Super Power Pack with 12 AA, 4 AAA, 2 C and D Spacers, 4 Position Charger and Storage Case , the water pump Drinkwell Big-Dog Pet Fountain and 1 day shipping(see my comments on these too) it was $340. $160 for more vacation extras! Well not quite I splurged for the tiny iams indoor cat food IAMS Indoor Weight Control Hairball Care Proactive Health Dry Cat Food, 4-Pound Bags (Pack of 5) and a new cat jungle Armarkat B6802 68-Inch Cat Tree, Ivory too… so all together it was more than $500 but everything would be ours to keep and use for daily living not $500 flying just out the window.

I set it all up and it was cat haven of the 21st century! All my friend had to do was come over every couple of days to make sure the kitties were still alive and that the gadgets were doing their job! No fuss, no muss, no touching anything. Hopefully.

It went PUUUURRRRRFECTLY!!! (sorry couldn’t resist)

I only gave it 4 stars because the jury is still out and i think that the scoopfree company should make a better price on a more complete package. I think the ULTRA should be more than a cover and a counter. It should include the mat and the teflon rake. I noticed the poop sticking to the included rake even at 20 minute waiting, so not a good thing. Also the little crystals hurt when you step on them. Near the box there are quite a few of them and at night I felt like i was walking on a gravel track to get to the bathroom. My son will have to invest in a dust buster which he was suppose to do for the other litter anyway.

I also understand that they want to do what the printer companies do and get you on the refills but that is just greedy not to mention unattractive to the environmentally conscious pet family. Make a plastic tray that is standard. Package the crystals in nice 12 paks at a good price with amazon prime shipping and i’ll buy them for the life of these cats.

Well I will keep folks posted over the next 90 days and beyond.

Thank you to all the other honest reviewers who helped us make our choice. Cat mess is a part of cat family members, but we can try to make the situation better for all. Thank you to the Scoopfree folks for their invention.

Now if they can only make something that gets that homework mess on the desk cleaned up….

    ********************************* UPDATE ****************************************************

Well it’s now been nearly 5 months and there have been a few hiccups but i upgraded the review to 5 stars because I can’t imagine how we lived with the manual cleaning box! The only thing is how horrible the stuff smells when you do open it up and clean it out, i advise doing that outside. Also the spot that receives the most liquid will get stained but no one’s going to see it but you when you’ve cleaning out the box!.

The rake does get dirty and stuff sticks to it so i’m ordering the teflon coated one and see how that goes. Over all i am so happy with the investment. The only thing is the cost of the crystals. It just seems to be so expensive for such a tiny amount. It’s as if they are charging you for the fact that you don’t have to change it as often or something. The crystals are made of silica which is refined sand right? So how is that so much more expensive than the other litter?

Thinking of where we can place another one to minimize the chance of smells even more. Right now the smell is slight when you get close to day 15 or so with two cats.

Product work great but comes with a coardborad tray. If you want a decent plastic tray you need to buy it zxtra for 14k. At thisbstage it is a bit of a rip off for small budget.
