This is a great head unit, probably the best on the market as of now (summer 2020). Having Android Auto / CarPlay be wireless is a huge plus, it has a ton of inputs and outputs, and works really well in general. Great unit for the price.
That said… I knock off a star here because for literally decades, aftermarket head units have always lagged what cell phones can do. I really like that this unit has its own GPS so you don’t “need” a phone running Android Auto for it to be usable. That’s great if you have guest (or child) drivers in a vehicle, which happens a lot more than you think – mom visiting to watch the kids? Left your phone at home accidentally? Drop your phone in the pool? It’s nice having GPS still work in these cases.
But it’s a world of difference between Google Maps / nav and the built in software. Don’t get me wrong, it WORKS. It just feels really basic in comparison. That goes for some other features as well, such as the audio options. The FM radio functionality compared to Spotify is just much more primitive. I’m not trying to compare the two apps. My point is about the user interface.
Anyway a minor detail. Otherwise it’s great.

Don’t know what the complaints are about. The unit sounds great and is easy to hookup. Upgrading allows to use same harness. Don’t expect to get the greatest sound if you use factory speakers and the unit amp. My system is 2 dash speakers, 2 front door, modulars in the rear doors and a sub. Powered by separate amps. The only knock I have is the NAV map resolution but I just plug in my android phone and use google maps. No need to buy the Sirius module if you have a subscription just use the app on your phone and plug it in. Finally the wireless sound quality is not good but that’s all head units. Direct connect, use line outs to amps and good speakers.

I’ve had the 8500NEX for a week so far.
This is a substantial upgrade from the stock nav unit with JBL circa 2007 I had previously. That is my baseline for comparison so needless to say I am extremely happy with technology from this decade.
I was able to keep using the existing JBL amp, backup camera, and steering wheel controls since I purchased (separately) a Maestro unit and one of their adapter kits. Those two items from Maestro greatly simplified the still somewhat complex setup of this receiver. They essentially are go betweens for the receiver and all the various factory connectors left behind when the factory receiver was disconnected.
The factory mic and existing GPS antenna are the only two things that I was unable to figure out how to integrate.
The factory backup camera was the most difficult thing to get going, mainly because I had to cut wires and with everything else having an adapter….I thought I must be doing something wrong if I had to cut wires… but now even the camera is integrated.
I am an android user. My experience with android auto and the 8500NEX so far is fantastic. with my phone setup to work with the receiver they both link up over bluetooth and wifi and android auto launches automatically.
Really my only gripes so far is that the linking up of android auto takes around 20-30 seconds to get automatically dialed in. Once it does, though its great. It starts google maps or Waze depending on preference and will pick up where I left off with the supported audio apps for example – amazon music, beyond pod, audible are all used regularly and supported. You can touch the screen or use google assistant to make things happen. Thanks to the Maestro setup I can use my existing steering wheel controls to activate the google assistant hand free without having to say “ok google”.
I guess the hand off to the google assistant to non-google native apps is a little clunky too but works.
The receiver plugs in to the OBDII port on my truck and pulls in a ton of data points. It registers check engine codes which is cool and accesses other stuff like fuel levels, speed, RPMs. It’s a subset of the usual stuff you can get from an OBDII adaptor. It also pulls in individual tire pressure (I had just 1 idiot light for all 4 tires before, this was a really awesome discovery for me.)
I tried weblink for all of about 10 minutes and to me it felt like how kindleOS feels when you are used to the real android experience – walled off, slow, with knock off apps that try and emulate what other android apps already do but just not there. I might try it again in a few months to see if it matures.
I am still learning the receiver and there is tons more I like about I might come back and update this review later. If something takes my experience in a negative direction, I’ll update my review as well.
I probably won’t use the pioneer nav much and might have considered a model without it but I go deep backwoods for hunting, camping, etc. I wanted to have maps where I might not have data

I snagged the auto-EQ to go along with this receiver. It plugs in to the receiver behind the tilt/drop down face. I made before buying it since I wasn’t going to pull everything apart to use it if that was the only way.
The 8500NEX sounded okay before, but sounds a bazillion times better after running through the auto-EQ setup. Honestly the 8500NEX as a flagship model should just come with an auto-EQ mic for the price.

I’m not quite sure why the 8500nex is getting low stars. People just complain about everything I guess…me, I usually just complain about other idiotic people but anyway, moving on. There aren’t a ton of videos on this model besides that silly pioneer dude. I might make a video that will help. First off, if you (at least in this case) have a 5100nex and above, the main wire harness DOES fit in the 8500nex unit. It, and most wires after close inspection are an exact match so that was nice not having to reconnect each damn wire! Just plugged them right in. In preparation for my 8500nex to arrive, I downloaded the latest firmware (v1.03) from Pioneer website (I did it from my Mac). Format to Fat32 prior to download. I put the usb stick in usb1 and after some time, it upgraded without incident. Anyway, the capacitive screen is very nice in response and function and big. Wireless CarPlay works flawlessly and is game changing. Sound of this unit is surprisingly superlative. I didn’t wire up a backup camera, which I was seriously considering and still might do later but with all my gift cards and Christmas money depleted from this stereo, it wasn’t a high priority. You don’t need to hook up the wire to your parking brake on the NEX systems for video to function as you drive, there’s a super secret spot in the lower left of the screen you touch for like 10 seconds until it says “ON” in the lower middle.
On a side note, I have never ordered a product that wasn’t at least shipped from amazon until this. I was a little leery being that this was sold by and shipped by Sound of Tri-State. I did my research on this company and they are not only legit but listed as an authorized dealer for a ton of high end sound gear for like Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer, etc. My radio came flawless and brand new.
