Firstly, let me say I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 simply because the original version I have has “Made in USA” on it along with providing 50+ years of flawless service. My Grandfather had this model no. 199, maybe from around 1960 or so (not sure why it’s listed as a 10-209 now), and I inherited it from him. The original that I still have may be older than the ’60s (I just don’t know), but what I do know is that it still works perfectly. Since it is a sentimental piece, I decided to see if I could retire my original and get another one.
I found this one on Amazon. Basically, as with almost anything “new and improved”, there are some differences, and usually the opposite of an improvement. But, in this case, they seem minor, and I would have to say this new version is pretty much the same…(so far, with about a month of use). The differences that I noticed are the obvious “Made in USA” is missing and the slotted screw to change the blade now allows a Philips screwdriver.
The overall feel seems to be close and the handle has 2 additional “features” (a “safety” interlock at the blade end, and a hole on the butt-end of the handle for a string/strap/whatever.
Sorry for the lengthy review. But, hopefully, this will allow you to understand how this compares to the original. And possibly, Stanley will pay attention and not stray from the quality of the older products.
Unfortunately, they are selling another utility knife that I owned for over 20 years and I purchased a replacement without reading the current reviews (the 10-989 contractors knife). The “new” version, from China, has 2 design flaws (the blade won’t retract all the way, and the button that used to allow easy changes of the blades without tools just falls out and doesn’t hold the handle together.
Nothing against this “199” utility knife, but if Stanley can make a crap version of another knife that used to be solid for over 20 years, I’m thinking you NEED to read these reviews. Obviously, the Stanley/Made in USA, is NOT necessarily the same quality you might remember if you used their tools over the last 50 years.
