My family actually really loves this treat maker. We’ve used it on multiple occasions for multiple types of desserts and have loved them all. That being said, there was a lot of trial and error. Read below for the Pros and Cons that I’ve found, as well as a list of helpful tips to make your experience easier than ours.

Pros:
– Works pretty fast
– Small enough to store easily in any freezer
– Makes a variety of treats
– Icecream/froyo can be rolled (with practice)
– Fun for the whole family
– Endless combinations! Yogurt and fruit are my favorite things to put on here – a rolled smoothie that tastes like dessert.

Cons:
– Small size means each batch is a single serving; not good for large families
– Only stays cold enough to get really good rolls for 2 servings (MAYBE as many as 3 if you are working fast) even when placed on top of icepacks. After that, it takes longer for the base or yogurt to set and they tend to fall apart instead of roll.
– Easy to leave base on for too long, which makes it impossible to roll (instead it just breaks into chunks of deliciousness)
– Air bubbles inside make freezing uneven (see Tip #1 for solution)
– Not the best for non-dairy-based products
– Expect some trial and error

Tips:
– Freeze your pan upside down (metal side down) in a flat/even spot to prevent air bubbles underneath the pan. My first two batches had one corner that would not freeze even though I had been very careful to freeze it evenly. Turns out there are air pockets inside. Freezing the pan upside solved this issue easily.
– For creamier results chop your base up when it’s about half frozen, remix on the pan, and spread out again. This doesn’t just make the ice cream and froyo creamier by limiting the ice crystals that form, but I found it rolls a lot better too.
– Only dairy-based liquids will roll well. The instructions do say that you can put juice and stuff on here to make slushies. While that absolutely will work, it’s going to be a PAIN to chop, probably ruin your scraper, and will make very little at a time. I don’t personally recommend it.
– Get a nice clean putty knife to store in the freezer rather than using the plastic spatulas provided in the kit. The cold putty knife will make rolling a lot easier.
– For ice cream base I found that one with condensed milk absolutely works better than straight heavy cream or milk if your goal is a nice creamy ice cream. For my first ice cream base I used just heavy cream, vanilla, and a bit of sugar and it got more icy than I would have liked and didn’t roll well (the flavor was phenomenal though). With condensed milk to supplement it was much creamier and rolled better.
– If you need to squeeze out one more batch but the tray has warmed up and is taking forever, pop it into the freezer for a couple of minutes to help the top side freeze. It’s important if you use this method that you also use the chop method (Tip #2) or your dessert will not roll well.
– To clean, scrape thoroughly, then use a hot, wet rag to *quickly* wipe any remaining base away. After each use, I like to do this quick-wipe method and then put it right back into the freezer (upside down still) so that it can be fully frozen for next time. After multiple uses (or when I notice air bubble problems again) I’ll pull it out and give it a full thaw, wash, and then refreeze.
– MOST IMPORTANT TIP OF ALL – Your treats will taste just as good if they don’t roll right or collapse in on themselves a bit. Don’t beat yourself up 🙂 Practice will help, but having fun is the most important of all.
