Dean A. Galaro –
I have yet to read through the entire book, but then again this is not the kind of book you sit down with and read page after page in order. You can, but don’t have to. I have best enjoyed this book by pulling it off the shelf from time to time and reading a poem or two, mulling them over, then returning the book to the shelf. Collected works of poetry can start to bleed together when I read too many individual poems in one sitting, and the beauty of a work like this is that I can keep coming back to it and find new poetry. It’s a thick, beautiful book that should be on the shelf of anyone who enjoys poetry or even for someone starting to get interested in Yeats (such as myself when I bought it). This volume will last you a long time and keep you coming back for more every time you open it up.

W.B. Yeats was prolific and had an exceptionally distinguished writing and public career. This book invites the reader to jump in at any page and just enjoy. It starts with Yeats’s first published poetry volume in 1889, when Yeats was 24, and ends with his last poems in 1938-1939. His output is inspiring and in addition to the poetry includes plays and other writing, obviously not included here in a volume solely devoted to the poetry. The longer section of the poetry is the start of the book, called “Part One/Lyrical,” followed by a shorter section “Narrative and Dramatic” (it’s amusing that there is no “Part Two”). One fascinating aspect of Yeats’s output is that some of his best work, such as “Sailing to Byzantium” and “Leda and the Swan,” came after he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923, which is contrary to the common view that the Nobel Prize in any field usually is awarded after the recipient has passed his or her productive years.
The additional material in the volume includes two short prefaces, some of Yeats’s notes, and explanatory notes for the poems.

Reading the selected works of William Butler Yeats is like an exhilarating but occasionally nauseating trip through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
He begins his verse in the style of the Romantics then becomes perhaps the most important English language poet of the Symbolist movement. He also successfully devotes himself to the cause of forging an Irish literary tradition for the nascent Irish Free State. Finally, he anticipates Jung in seeing the psychological ramifications of the symbols and rituals of the world’s religions.
But then there is also Yeats’s Jungian shadow. He delves deeply into occult literature and black magic. He devotes much time to constructing what would now be called a new age description of the personality. And some of his last writings call for eugenic measures against Irish Catholics and support for the Fascist European states of the 1930s (he passed away in 1939.)
I don’t mention these to diminish his immense contributions to modern civilization; just that he is a more complex and nuanced character than may appear from his ingenious poetic and critical works. He’s worth reading, of course, but it’s best to go in open-eyed about these darker features.

I trust it goes without saying that William Butler Yeats is one of the greatest English-language poets of all time. This volume contains his entire body of verse, and is a magnificent treasure trove that will delight and stun the reader for decades.
I give two stars to the cheap materials used to create this masterpiece. I literally had this book out of the Amazon box for a matter of hours before the cover started to curl of its own accord, as though possessed by a poetry-hating demon. The paper is low-grade and coarse, with an unappealing brownish tinge.
Despite my love of Yeats, I find that I unconsciously tend to keep this book on the shelf just to keep its ugliness out of site, and I am by no means an aesthete. If you can find a slightly nicer version, it is worth paying a little extra.

I am reviewing *The Collected Poems* not a selection. This is the complete collected Yeats — all the poems he chose to republish. The editor’s notes link to the text. Many of them will seem obvious to most readers, while other will be helpful to most readers. There are no direct links to Yeats’s own notes, but they are findable. I got this for my smartphone so I could read them while commuting, and it is a joy to have them so accessible..

Reading through these wonderful poems by Yeats is like listening to divine music — the voicings of the language are simply astonishing. The themes are simple and homespun, and at the same time have a classical feel and nuance about them, and there is a sense of the mystical. But who could possibly not be mesmerized by lines like “this is no country for old men,” or from “Among School Children” — “how can we know the dancer from the dance”? Enchanting, start to finish. The simplicity of the voicings, and yet their evocativeness, is astonishing.

This McMillan book series is very well made & a handy size for carrying in your handbag or backpack. It has only a cardboard cover & dust jacket so guard against tears in the paper…Very attractive. Contains the poem texts, no notes or essays.

I’m rarely surprised by a books binding but this one made me smile and say “oh!” It’s obvious that the book’s preparation received a lot of love and attention. I’m excited to dive into this collection,
