‘The Death of Ivan Ilych and Other Stories’ by Leo Tolstoy
All stories contained in this small volume are truly wonderful, however, I’ve chosen to focus on `Family Happiness’ – the first short novel (or novella) in this issue – solely due to the fact that is unique amongst Tolstoy’s writings. This narrative is written from the feminine perspective – a young girl named Masha’s – which sets it apart from Tolstoy’s unparalleled catalogue.
It is a tale of love, the evolution of marriage and the stresses found in so many relationships. Masha marries an older man, twice her age and a guardian figure, who has thus far experienced what he considers to be all of his life adventures and by the beginning of the narrative is well settled into a staid and happy existence. After an awkward beginning to their marriage, Masha experiences a world completely new to her – cosmopolitan and society based – as opposed to the country life she had heretofore experienced. As her life experiences expand, the way she views her husband becomes altered and she struggles to understand how their love has changed and whether or not it can ever return to what it once was. Consequently, Masha must face the future with the man she has always loved and struggle to accept this new reality, recognizing the evolution of her life.
Perhaps, Tolstoy’s true feelings on marriage are on display in `Family Happiness’. The story evolved from his own relationship with a woman, significantly junior to he. However, Tolstoy did not marry her, and this story may demonstrate why. This is truly a wonderful novella that I’m sure you’ll remember well after you turn the last page.
Forgetfulfellow –
I don’t want to write a long review about this book, but I do want to say that this novel is painfully real. The eventual distaste of a family towards a nuclear family member who is suffering seems opposite of the politically correct, but how spot on that is in our culture behind the scenes.
Nancy Schmeichel –
Book was in excellent condition. It arrived in a timely manner and the cost was great. Amazon is a great way to save money.
Scott Walker –
This book contains four 100 page or less novellas. Not only are Tolstoy’s stories enjoyable with their touching detail and, do contain valuable messages, they, are also beneficial in developing our writing skills.
Family Happiness: Written in first person through a girl in her late teens who, has recently lost her father and now, her mother. From an affluent family she currently lives with her younger sister and is raised by the governess. Consequently she falls in love and marries a friend of her fathers who is considerably older. With beautiful prose it becomes a story of fading romance and changing love. I found it not at all Russian but incredibly universal.
Death of Ivan Ilych: An upper middle class man is consumed with how to deal with the prospect of his death: the increasing pain in his body, and the question of why; the self-analyzing, the self-pity, anger, to finally, the last hours–acceptance. It is a dreadfully sad and pathetic story but with a glimmer of hope. It captures the human soul.
The Kreutzer Sonata: An unidentified man listens patiently as a wealthy stranger rants philosophically on his meaning and observations of life, specifically marriage–woman. He believes that the torments, the emptiness, the dwindling, hopeless marriage is not scarce but the norm–we carry on a deception. All this is the result of the moral decline. His wife goes on to develop his sense of vanity and eventually succumbs to unfaithfulness. He ends by killing her. Not much has changed. Tolstoy is remarkably brilliant in how he captures the human essence and the world as we know it.
Master and Man: A landowner and his worker travel the winter countryside through a peasant area in Russia drawn by a single horse sledge. The landowner has a business deal waiting for him and time is of the essence. He believes it will come to be lucrative as he gives much thought on it. Defying the weather they end up stranded in a severe snowstorm. The next day they are discovered buried under the snow. The worker is found alive with the frozen body of the landowner on top of him. The horse too is frozen. In the end, the perceived wealth did not matter, only the life of his worker.
Richard Chandler –
Tolstoy is most accessible in his novellas, and this collection includes the best of them–amazingly enough, Tolstoy is a great writer even without his two epics, and this book shows him at his best.
