Before the below revelatory deep dive, we want to say that this Debian Handbook is a valuable resource for anyone looking to install and administer Debian desktops, servers, networks, etc. It’s got virtually everything that both novice and pro would need to know to get started. Anything else can be sourced on the web at Debian’s or this handbook’s websites.
After looking through this book and getting ready to settle into the world of Debian, we decided to do a web search on something related to the book. Lo and behold, the authors support this handbook with update for errata, new info on Debian, etc. Totally excellent!
The really big surprise is that the entire book is available at the author’s debian-handbook dot info website to download for free, or, if you have integrity, a monetary contribution to support the project. The newest online version is for Debian Bullseye, which is Debian 11. The authors also provide downloads of this handbook for older versions of Debian is that’s what you’re using.
Right now the latest English version of this handbook for Debian Bullseye is a *.mobi file, which is easily converted to a *.PDF file for free at any of the online conversion sites. We converted at Zamzar and it took less than 5 minutes for a complete conversion of 722 pages. All of the links throughout the book converted correctly to the PDF format, which means that navigating the book in PDF format is simply point and click as it should be.
Although the latest distro for Debian ver. 12.6 became available in July 2024, it’s too soon to update this handbook with any noteworthy differences between version 11 and the latest version 12.

Awesome desk reference, worth every penny! Always good things to say about Linux! I’ve used it for the better part of 28 yrs! Bullet proof operating system. I am not a “gamer” so I can’t comment on it’s usage for gaming, love the VIM text editor too! POWERFUL!

With Redhat/CentOS becoming strange and untrustworthy, we are moving our systems to Ubuntu, a derivative of Debian. This detailed book has been very helpful. It doesn’t cover everything (Linux is far too big for that), but it does cover the most important things, compactly and well. Surprisingly readable for a book (probably) translated from French. Two pages describe an open source program I supported for more than a decade; the authors wrote a good description. The book is print-on-demand, so future upgrades should be quick.
I also purchased an additional (English language) copy for a colleague in Guatemala City. He looked at the Spanish language edition online, and said it was a poor translation, probably from the English rather than the French. His copy was delivered (DHL) to his home office surprisingly quickly. International shipping and customs almost doubles the price, while Guatemala programmer salaries are less than 20% of US salaries. He says it is still worth it, even at that high relative price.
Since this handbook is also online, it might be tempting to download and laser-print it; but paper and toner isn’t free, and time is costly. Some of the purchase price goes to the authors, paying for their past work and future improvements. So buy the book, and festoon it with sticky notes.
