What an accomplishment! I have never been a real fan of comic books, but I do love popular science. It has always been my experience that when an expert has a full and clear grasp of their subject, they are able to explain difficult concepts in a way that I can also grasp. And I do love science, just not a scientist myself. This book conveyed challenging concepts clearly, but had the advantage of encouraging me to further explore each one. It made me want to know more. Johnson must be an out of this world teacher and educator!

The information imparted is interesting, informative. The vehicle chosen to
impart the information is childish, annoying.
D. Fletcher –
This is a brilliant work. It is non trivial, has thoughtful pause panels that reflect a time to ponder what is being talked about.
Quark –
A fantastic new approach to science writing; it really shows science communication. I can imagine having these conversations myself. More of the public needs to have dialogues like this. And it’s a great way to get into the science if you are interested.
America’s Earliest Bohemians –
Excellent story telling

My blurb is partly on the back of the book, but here is the whole thing:
Clifford Johnson’s The Dialogues: Conversations About the Nature of the Universe is everything I would have loved as a teen physics nerd, and exactly what I want the public — and my fellow scientists — reading now that I’m a professional physics nerd. The scientific world according to Johnson is one where human curiosity about the universe represents exciting possibilities, and a systematic approach to investigation isn’t dry or boring but rather a very fun, creative way to think. Dialogues shows that science can be a great humanist enterprise that speaks to all of us, successfully upending tired traditions in science writing, which all too often rely on outdated tropes about what science is, what scientists look like, and what we can trust the public to understand.
Reading as a field theorist: this is simply the best introduction to electromagnetism — for any audience — that I’ve ever seen. I learned something from it, and I would consider putting this on a freshman physics syllabus.
Christopher Taylor –
I watch tons of science videos, but even so, some of the physics was either new to me or was presented in a novel way… and the characters and situations were compelling enough to keep me reading on their own. This seems like a great book to have around the house for both science aficionados and reluctant learners.
Having made my own faltering attempt at graphic novel, I know what an epic endeavor this book must have been for a working scientist. If I were to offer any criticism it would be that some segments with a lot of “talking head” panels might have been condensed a bit (not easy). I hope the author is not too exhausted from this effort to produce more such work!

This is a really enlightening and entertaining read. It provides unpretentious explanations about multiple science and mathematical related topics.
The graphic novel format helps to present information in a way that is not used often at all. The combination of scientific theorems told in colourful pictures helps the reader to feel a part of each discussion.
Each science and mathematics theory is represented in conversations that allow you to feel apart of things.
If you have at least a passing interest in the universe, space and time then I strongly recommend this book which does a great job of making difficult ideas accessible to a broad range of people whether they are knowledgeable about science theories or not.
Great educational book.
Stamatios Nicolis –
This is an excellent presentation of the subtle issues of physics, in a highly original way, that does full justice to the subject.
Amazon Customer –
This book does a really great job of entertaining while being informative – with chapters and stories geared to all ages and levels of science understanding – without being pedantic or (even remotely) condescending. It poses questions large and small, and tackles them hand-in-hand with the reader. My favorite element of it was the choice to put notes on further reading at the end of each chapter/story, as I found myself much more likely to continue exploring that way than if I had simply stumbled onto a bibliography at the end. This book is unlike anything else I’ve read. Good stuff!
Malcolm Carpenter –
Delightfull. Now, I can almost keep up in discussions with my grandchildren.
Nathan V –
The illustrations and observation of conversations help a lot with very complicated science!
It is not a mild afternoon read and required a fair amount of attention to understand everything but that’s why I enjoyed it. I did have to search a lot of terms because without any background a lot of the content was over my head.
It is possible to read the entire graphic novel in a day but I’d suggest taking your time and rereading anything that doesn’t make sense the firsts time. I’d love to see more graphic novels like this.
A SIMPLE READER –
How can you not fall in love with a graphic novel that encompasses “conversations about the nature of the universe”, conversations that range from a brother and sister trying to figure out how one cup of rice kernels ends up as a full pot of rice, to the cycle of life and death in the universe. . .and more, oh, so much more. Read this book slowly – ponder, and “listen” to it. For example, one of my favorite sections was the discussion between two people on Einstein’s equations for spacetime, and comparing it to cooking. That’s my simplistic shorthand for what is an absolutely dazzling discussion of Einstein’s work in “general relativity”, and making it understandable to me, a complete dodo bird when it comes to science, math, and physics.
This book is breathtakingly brilliant. This is a perfect Christmas gift for both science mavens, and, as I said, dodo birds like me! And did I neglect to mention the artistic joy of the graphics? Well, I just did. Now it’s your turn to delight in the world of Clifford Johnson’s The Dialogues – buy it; gift it; read it.
