Lucy Foley has done it again! Keeping in vein with her novel, The Hunting Party, she serves up a similar whodunit. The prime ingredients in both books are an isolated location, treacherous weather, and a group of characters with plenty of skeletons rattling in proverbial closets.
For The Guest List, Foley presents the marriage of two pseudo celebrities. Jules is the publisher of a trendy magazine and Will is the star of a reality TV series. Together these two make the perfect couple—attractive, glamorous, and wealthy. For their wedding, they invite guests to a remote island off the coast of Ireland. Think rugged cliffs, crashing waves, the ruins of a stone chapel, and a cemetery dotted with Celtic crosses. The setting is exquisite, wonderfully played for mood that is both over the top glamorous, yet darkly sinister. I loved how a cave along the shoreline and the sightings of cormorants added creepy atmosphere.
The story is told in multiple first person POV (I had no problem keeping track of whose head I was in), along with scattered chapters of omniscient. It’s a little slow to get off the ground, but after a few chapters¬—WOW! Trust me, you’ll want to stick with it.
The cast of characters is an intriguing mix—the bride, her younger sister, the groom with his frat buddies and polar-opposite best man, the caterer and her husband who are just launching their business, the plus-one and her husband…who just happens to be the bride’s best friend.
When a body turns up, Foley keeps the identity of the victim wrapped tightly until the end. Throughout, tensions simmer, tempers flare, and petty jealousies erupt. And erupt again. Entangling more and more people in the web. By the time the identity of the body is revealed, most everyone has a motive.
All of this undercutting and sniping is played against the backdrop of an impending storm and the extravagance of the wedding. I’m usually pretty good at fingering the culprit, and although I had suspicions that eventually proved correct, the whys and wherefores completely blindsided me. The plot threads are deftly woven, for a wholly satisfying and stunning conclusion.
If you like a combination of psychological thriller and whodunit murder mystery, this is a fabulous five-star read!

Gripping, a page-turner… Well-written plot. One of the best thrillers I’ve read recently. I give a 5 star, although I have figured it all out before the end… It has nothing do to with ‘And Then There Were None’ by Agatha Christie, however some people were making comparisons, maybe because the murder venue is on an island…and the ones who did were giving a better evaluation to The Guest List… Not true ! “And Then There Were None” is the best thriller ever !

The story takes place on an unusual uninhabited island off the coast of Ireland that can only be reached by boat, and the crossings are rough. An unusual place for a wedding, but that’s where Jules, a successful owner of an online magazine and a social influencer has chosen for her wedding to the fabulous Wills, her soon-to-be husband. He is handsome, charming, charismatic and star of a Tv show. They are the perfect couple, or so it would appear. But there are undercurrents of secrets and darkness lurking under the surface of the festivities. Then there the grooms friends from the exclusive boarding school. Their hijinks are overdone. The best man doesn’t fit in with the classy guests. The bride’s maid of honor is a man who has come with his wife. There’s the wedding planner who has to make sure everything happens on time and smoothly. There’s the chef who does all the cooking behind the scenes. The tents in which the festivities take place are lovely unless a guest wanders off into the darkness and falls into a peat bog. The weather doesn’t help with gusting winds and dropping temperatures. If a reader is smart(I wasn’t) they will remember the clues that are dropped throughout the story. It all leads to a dramatic and surprising climax. Thoroughly satisfying read.

Quick moving, twists and human characters well done. You won’t be disappointed. A touch of Irish local makes this escapist heaven.

The writing style, common to many authors today, is like a girl’s diary, which is not appealing and nearly led me to stop reading. Foley can be quite literary with some of her writing, particular setting descriptions, which demonstrates talent. As for the plot, it was somewhat cliche and copied a few classic mysteries, notably Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, without anything especially new or original. Foley paces the story well and creates decent suspense, but the characters are superficial and their actions and motivations contrived and unbelievable. All the male characters are “frat” insiders or outsiders, stuck in their high school personas, while all the females are fixated on similar adolescent feelings of self-image. Despite some decent aspects of this book, the premise, characters, plot, and resolution bordered on silly.

Upon first beginning The Guest List I found it difficult to get in to and as I was trying to sort out the characters and their relationships to each other, this intense excitement began to happen; I was caught up in a terrific murder mystery, only the actual murder didn’t occur until close to the end! We, as readers, anticipate it before it happens but we know it will happen, so we delve into the backgrounds of the various suspects with anticipation, attempting to solve the crime and the victim long before the crime has occurred! Lucy Foley writes with such expertise that we’re completely caught up in the intertwined characters and how what’s about to happen will work itself out! This is one of the best who-dun-its I’ve read in some time and I read a book every couple of days! So, believe me when I highly recommend this excellent book for your enjoyment!
