I like that this tool is wireless and updates fast for the models of cars needed on the iOS app. I also like that the speed of communication between the module, vehicle, and app are relatively quick! I have a VW which usually requires VW only tools and or software to do the majority of diagnostics properly, but this tool does all of it as well. From your basic OBD trouble codes to canbus data logging and statistical data readout, and also ABS, SRS airbags, Electronic module codes, and even transmission! I would recommend this scan tool for the price of anybody looking to get one of the best scan tools for the value!

I spent some time researching many options for a new OBD2 scanner. I decided on the TOPDON TopScan as well as an Innova 5610. I have a much older Innova scanner which still works but only scans ECM and ABS modules (for some Makes/Models). I needed data from the TCM on a 2018 GMC Yukon XL. I first tried the scan with the Innova 5610 which performed the full scan in mere moments. Among the 20+ DTCs that were detected, two were of interest: a P2723 from the TCM (solenoid valve 5 stuck off) and a P0700 from the ECM (TCM requested MIL illumination). I should have immediately compared the TopScan here, but unfortunately I first cleared the DTCs with the Innova.

Then I plugged in the TopScan and performed a full module scan. It took longer to go through its full scan than the Innova. But it could read the VIN automatically and identify the exact vehicle (make/model/trim) it was plugged into. It only detected 13 DTCs, since some were already cleared by the Innova. But the ones still detected by the TopScan were identical to what the Innova had found.

I’m still getting used to the interface of the TopGuru app (iPhone). The scans can be saved to reports on your phone which can be pulled up later to review. There are Technical Service Bulletins and there is a “DTC Repair Guide” which gives you a summary list of top-ranked and frequently-reported fixes. A repair guide is not available for every code. (I suppose that’s true because some of these are unique to the manufacturer.) The Repair Steps, at least for the P2723 code, were short but arranged in order of easiest/cheapest fix to costliest/most-time-consuming. I can’t confirm that this ordering is consistent for every DTC fix, but it seems to be for other random codes tested: P0130, P0700. If so, this is a nice, quick reference and guide.

There is much more to the TopScan than I’ve used so far. I’ve not viewed Live Data streams, yet, nor have I used any of the bi-directional tests–common in modern higher end scanners. The AutoVIN scan was convenient on my 2018 and 2014 vehicles, though it did not work on my older 2000 Nissan Pathfinder. (Tech Support was kind enough to inform me that TOPDON products support vehicles as early as 2001 with ODB2 certifications. My vehicle probably does not have this.)

My version currently is the TopScan Lite. But I intend to upgrade to the Pro license to perform a TMPS Reset on my Yukon. Even my new, more expensive Innova 5610 can’t do this.

Overall, it might not be as fast as other handheld scanners. But it still does the job nicely, has quite a lot of features (full ODB2 module scanning, reports, bi-directional tests, live streams), and costs much less than other scanners that do the same thing. Besides that, you can leave it plugged in permanently if you want.

I had an Airbag light on and my old scanner couldn’t detect the issue, so I watched some YouTube videos about this particular scanner and it looked like it would read all the sensors on my vehicle. I ran a scan for the first time today and it came up with a whole bunch of fault codes, some old and some new (including the Airbag code). So I did what was suggested on YouTube and cleared all codes, then ran the scan again. The only fault code that was displayed again was the one for the Airbag U0172. I looked on YouTube for this code and It turns out to be a speed sensor in the drivers door that had lost connection, the power connector had come loose. The hardest part of this repair was taking the door skin off and putting it back on again, clicking the connector back in took a couple of seconds and the problem is fixed. For the price of this unit it saved me hundreds of dollars and a repair shop as they can say virtually anything if you don’t know what the problem is before you go and they always say that they have to run a scan of your vehicle first which is more expensive than the cost of this unit alone. I really like how easy this scanner is to set up and use and because I always have my Android phone with me, I can always check for issues at any time. It’s very accurate, easy to use, and does the same job as a lot of scanners several times it’s cost. I am very pleased with this scanner and would recommend to anyone looking to save money on auto repairs.

I bought this scanner for bi-directional controls, and to abs bleed my 03 Suburban Lt 5.3 Vortec that has a spongy brake pedal even with new lines, and MULTIPLE SHOPS ABS BLEEDING WITHOUT ANY IMPROVEMENT! They say it’s the abs module underneath, which we replaced and still it happens.

So the fix is, that they UNPLUG MY BRAKE SWITCH off the reservoir to eliminate the warning light on the dash.

I CAN’T SELL MY CARS LIKE THAT. That should be illegal, and my name means you get quality products and service from me always.

So I get this scanner to DIY myself and tinker with the abs bleed function.

At first the scanner DIDNT WORK?! NO POWER OR ANYTHING! I figured maybe charging issue? Nope, doesn’t need charging. So now what?

My trucks and 03 suburban Lt with the 5.3 flex fuel engine and it’s not reading the port. No power at all! Truck runs great! But the one cigarette lighter is dead and I get random warning lights but I’ll clean grounds and issues fixed. Also my trucks brake light warning comes on and feels spongy at times and I replaced all lines and had multiple shops bleed and abs bleed Common issues with these trucks.

    So is the scanner bad?!

Well I test my mom’s 2013 f150 fx4 Ecoboost 3.5l crew cab. DEVICE TURNED ON INSTANTLY. Happen to find out her tpms was BAD and her tire was at 16psi. (Her truck doesn’t have the live tire reading info like most vehicles offer). We would have had to test each tire for a reading instead of having this tool. Found a nail. Cool I’ll plug it in no time with my Amazon tire patch kit.

TESTED THE BI DIRECTIONAL CONTROLS, HERE IN HER TRUCK, it worked AMAZING! Tested locks and windows well as horn. It’s so awesome!

Next is my GFS 2015 crv ex. Scanned her car with no issues

Go back to my truck, and I figured my obdii port is dead?
Check my fuses and the cigarette lighter fuse was blown. So I replaced it immediately. Also plugged my brake switch in, that they unplugged after giving up. Guess what…..

PORT WORKS NOW?! Scanner works INSTANTLY.

I test and find 20+ faults. All with the transfer case, the door switch module, the bcm not reading modules anymore, etc.

    My brake warning light, GONE.

So I take it for a test drive. BRAKES ARE SOLID NOW. Wtf ?! No issues there. Like new brakes. Cigarette lighter works now.

Between the Brakes being fixed, the obd port being fixed, my parents tire got fixed faster, I learned all the issues I gotta kink out on my car and i can actually live data read and ACTIVE TEST each module! The insight I can pull on cars within seconds is astounding! THIS IS MY NEW FAVORITE DEVICE!! I WANNA BUY EVERY CAR EVER MADE AND FIX EM.

Well worth the $50 I got it for. Hands down. I feel like a master mechanic. I easily saved multiple trips borrowing scanners, or paying to have codes scanned and two hours of them tinkering, now I save all that moolah and they can’t charge me since I GOT MY OWN TOOL NOW!

WELL WORTH ITS PRICE, EVEN AT $89 IT WAS BEFORE MY DISCOUNT! I WAS JUST LUCKY TO GET A DEAL!

NOT SAYING BUY IT, BUT ID HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU GET ONE.

THANK YOU TOPDON FOR A JOB DONE WELL!!
