It’s very hard for violas to find fun, unaccompanied music that’s not just technical work. That’s why I was really impressed to find myself actually enjoying this book. I played viola for 8 years and then took a break for 3. As someone who’s picking my viola up again for the first time, this book is challenging enough for me to re-learn some skill, but easy enough for me not to get frustrated and give up.

The Flying Solo Viola book is definitely a stretch for me, mainly because of lack of confidence in myself and when I am playing it solo there is no one else to “hide” behind! But of course if you have others you can always grab some friends and all play the same part, which is exactly what I do with my teacher. There is plenty in this book to keep my interest up and to also keep my skills moving forward. My viola teacher was so impressed with it that she wants to get herself a copy! Highly recommend!

Nice collection of satisfying arrangements. In addition to its performance value, this book could work well as a way for students to explore more 6/8 passagework, and practice and apply fast string crossings and simple double stops. It could also serve as a connector for students between folk/fiddle tunes and their classical pieces. The fantasia aspect to these arrangements gives good practice in phrasing and distinguishing between voices–a good tool as advance preparation for solo Telemann and Bach. Fun and portable music-making!
