I’m 39 weeks pregnant and sick to my stomach. I have headaches galore, sorest of sore throats and a wicked cough that bites. I wanted for a change a great working product that is not only accurate but long living. I’ve bought crap thermometers in the past with terrible reliability and no accuracy (oral to forehead). I thought it time, especially with my first born coming, that I invest in a high quality, accurate thermometer and what better than the ones used in clinical settings?

I read awesome reviews about this particular model and was reluctant to buy it when I first laid my eyes upon it as it was over $200. There was a decline in price right as I truly needed a working thermometer and so bought it. It arrived in 1 day, which was so perfect. Thank you Amazon Prime. I was very happy I didn’t have to go drag my sick pregnant butt to the stores to buy one.

However to my dismay, my product didn’t work. The only icons I was able to see was that the battery was fully charged and that I was able to change the mode from C to F and vice versa. Currently, this product is being sold by a certain party (Johnson Distributors) and for those considering on buying I want you to be aware that apparently refunds are not allowed. What is weird is that I requested a refund on April 12 and in the picture I have posted, it says my refund closed on May 11. I’m not sure what world we live in except for the one where April comes before May… Maybe these sellers live in a different world.

Anyways, I ended up having to drag my pregnant belly to Costco and grabbed a decent thermometer that works and am happy with that.

Things I don’t like about this thermometer:

-I don’t like how this thermometer has the batteries inserted already. I get antsy about battery drainage.
-I also don’t like that the only manual is in CD form. I’d rather have a pamphlet.
-I don’t like how it’s not as user friendly as other thermometers (perhaps this is due to receiving a defective one)

Anyways, still order it if it you like, or don’t. I just want you to be aware of my experience and be cautious!!

WelchAllyn 690 SureTemp arrived non-functioning/defective. The unit powers on for 5 seconds and then shuts down. Display stays at 00.0 no matter where probe is placed. The “mode” button is not working. Too bad b/c i’m in need of an operational thermometer since my wife has the flu. I called WelchAllyn Tech Support to see if there was some kind of reset. We ran through the procedure but it did not help. WelchAllyn technician said it is defective and to return it to seller. Unfortunately i have not heard back from Maxcare to exchange unit. I suppose i’ll return it but i hope they don’t charge me a restocking fee? I just want what i paid for…

    UPDATE 1/19/2018
Amazon reached out to me and resolved problem with new unit. This is why I will continue to use Amazon.
THANKS AMAZON!! – Another happy customer

Works quickly and perfectly for our newborn. We had an early fever scare with our baby just days after she was born. The cheapo digital baby thermometer we had from our baby registry took one measurement, and then died when we were taking a confirmation measurement. It was high enough that our daughter was admitted at the hospital where we stayed for the next couple of days under antibiotic treatment until the lab results confirmed she was infection free (and thankfully no hepatitis).

In any case, the is the same unit with the small exception of the backlighting and a few other hospital focused features on the lcd that is used in our local hospital and also our pediatrician. (Hospital actually had 692 model which has backlighting, antitheft, and a 60 second countdown for taking pulse and a wall mount). The only thing I’d like to have from the 692 is the backlighting but really its no big deal.

PRICE: This thing is expensive. What do you expect? It’s the same type as they use in doctors offices. I don’t think it’s SO expensive that it is out of your price range. If you’re even considering this thermometer, it means that you have had some pretty serious need of it. Read on, friend.

PERSONAL NEED: I needed this thing because I have to monitor my temperature constantly. I’ve had temperature spikes that have sent me to the ER and with all of our old store-bought thermometers, the temperature was never right. How did we know? We brought them in with us to the ER and compared. Ours was off by 3-4 degrees each time, which can be a HUGE difference to a sick person like myself.

THERMOMETER: This thermometer is sturdy. It came with a small box of probe covers, although I ordered a large case of them as well. Truly, I’m in awe and in love. It’s accurate every time. And now, when I bring in my log to my doctors, there’s no doubt on their part of the temperatures, because this product is one they have their offices as well. I’m sure that this thermometer will be with us until the day it dies, which I’m told is years and years and years from now, if it is well taken care of.

BOTTOM LINE: If you need an ACCURATE, DURABLE, and SAFE (probe covers are so smart) thermometer, then this is the thermometer for you. Welch Allyn make quality products, so the price should not be a surprise. I believe that you get what you pay for, and I feel that this holds true with this thermometer. I couldn’t be happier and I would not go back to change my mind about ordering it. In fact, if/when this thermometer dies, I plan on buying another one from this maker (that is hopefully available on Amazon, because I love Amazon).
