Very good, and holds tune well (after a while since nylon strings take a while to set in).
Noticed a slight bump at the back after maybe 2 weeks, so I would advise proper inspection (with detail) when receiving the product. Otherwise, it’s a really nice guitar.

I bought this exact same guitar from another online retailer. It is a really stunningly beautiful guitar, but the action is really up there. It looks like the neck was set improperly, as a truss rod correction (even if it had one, which it doesn’t), wouldn’t correct the problem. Even if I re-crown the bridge insert, it won’t fix it, as it can’t be lowered any more…it needs a much lower bridge. If these problems can be fixed, it *might* be OK.
I either need to send it back to Yamaha, or display it on a wall…did I mention that it’s pretty?

I’m a beginning guitarist and bought this guitar because it had good reviews and a solid spruce top. I can’t really tell if the latter is true or not but it sounds really good. My only problem is that the bridge maybe a bit too high. I measured the height of the strings against what the experts give as the ideal height at a given fret and found they are about 1/16 too high. Maybe they will come down with more use. The strings are fairly difficult to hold behind the frets but other guitarists say that time practicing will lessen this problem and lighter strings help. In any event, I bought and will soon install some lighter strings that, hopefully, will be a bit easier on the fingers. I enjoy the guitar. It is light in weight, but construction appears solid. The fret board is wide enough for my stubby little fingers to hold strings down without touching other strings unlike that on a steel string acoustic guitar I bought and then returned. For the money, I think it is a good deal, but I sometimes wonder if I shouldn’t have tried an even smaller student model at the start. Practice is everything and a small model can teach the basic moves more easily sitting on the couch.

UPDATE:
I took this to a local music shop. The guy there （This person also plays classical guiar and has a 5k+ one (my guitar instructor recommended I see him) looked over this guitar and said there wasn’t much he could do except maybe file the nut depths down a bit. When asked about why action hasn’t been lowered much even though I lowered saddle, the guy simply said, this is a cheap guitar and there isn’t too much you can do to make it better.
I left my guitar to him for a week anyway. The action at the top (down the fretboard) has improved, but playability still pretty much sucks.

ORIGINAL:
First thing I noticed taking this out of the box is how orange the top board is, which looks a lot more like Cedar than Spruce. However the guitar tag does say MS for Matte Spruce. Sound wise, while this does sound more vibrant than the all laminate C40, it is not much. Time will tell if the wood used for the top is of any actual quality.
Second thing I noticed was there were several red ink marks on the top soundboard. (See user pictures that I uploaded) I was like, WTF?! Why is there red ink marks on the board??? There is absolutely no reason for that.
Third thing I noticed was the blemish on the backside of the guitar. While the rest of the matte finish is smooth and nice, that spot really stands out. It feels rough and blemished. Also see my picture.
The action is kind of high. I lowered the saddle by about 4MM, and it is still very high. (The saddle is only about 1.5mm-2mm above the bridge now, yet the action has not been lowered by even 1mm). This indicates that the neck may be warped.
I do enjoy the sound – I like it better than my C40 and my La Patrie Motif that I had. However I absolutely hate playing this. It does not strum well, and does not finger pick well. I am taking a folk guitar class, and the 20+ year old all laminate base models in the class room plays better than this.
I will take this to a guitar shop to see if they can fix it. This is an additional $70 on top of the guitar price. The La Patrie Etude is only $360. Even though that is almost twice as much as this $200 guitar, it is handmade in Canada (and not China), with better parts (tuner, saddle, nut). I just did not like my Motif because it was too small. If I could do it all over again I would buy the Etude.
Yamaha is REALLY dropping on quality. I have no idea where all those 5-star reviews for all of their entry level guitars come from??? My instructor seems to recommend Yamahas highly as well, but he hasn’t touched anything entry-level for decades, so his impression of Yamaha must be from the 80s!

Two years ago, after a very long haitus, I picked up my old Yamaha student guitar and began to play. To my surprise, I have been playing very regularly.
I needed to leave a guitar in my home State so I could practice when I was there and not lose precious momentum. I purchased the CG122MS as an upgrade and shipped the older Yamaha home.
I am far from a guitar aficionado or an expert musician. I am a struggling beginner still. Notwithstanding that, I am so pleased with this guitar. It creates such a vibrant sound, so much better than my old Yamaha–and I was perfectly pleased with that one. The action is perfect, in my opinion, it stays tuned, it plays wells, it feels good in my hands. My hats off to Yamaha, for being able to make guitars at such affordable prices, without sacrificing quality and sound.
You cannot go wrong with this model. With my experience with Yamaha, I am sure the less expensive models are fine for beginners, but I would spend the extra money and start here.
My only complaint is that the D string broke right away and the E was unraveling, so I had to replace them both. In hindsight, I would have de-tensioned the wound strings a bit before I tuned them. Still, 5 stars. Well worth that minor inconvenience.

Yamaha CG122MS Spruce Top Classical Guitar, Matte Finish have been playing guitar for many years, both classical and electric. Both finger style and with a plck. Just bought the yamaha cg122ms classical guitar and love it. Beautiful to look at and play. Sustain for days, great neck, and perfect action. Also i was surprised at how loud the guitar is . You cant beat this guitar for the price, although it sounds as good as guitars at twice the price.
