First of all let me commend the vendor Buy Japan. Upon receipt of my order they had processed and shipped to the US within 72hrs my package was in US customs awaiting inspection. The whole process from vendor to my front door was only about a week and that’s from Japan. They also did an excellent job of packing the horn even bubble wrapping the box on the outside.

Now as for the instrument itself I was able to play with it right out of the box. I chose this instrument because I’m a technology geek and I’ve always wanted to learn to play trumpet, this horn kills two birds with one stone. It’s a lot easier to play than a traditional trumpet because you are not required to build an embechure in order to play it. Instead of buzzing into a mouthpiece one sings into it and the built in microphone picks up your voice. Among several cool features are…..

-It has 22 different instrumental voices to choose from 7 of which are trumpet voices. Spome of the others are Soprano Sax, Trombone, 3 Flutes,Oboe etc…

-There is a demo option wiyh accompanying music in which you can play along and watch the valves lioght to the correct note to be played.

-You can opt to bypass the valve and hum straight through the instrument

-It can operate via 4 AA batteries or with the AC adaptor plugged in

-There are jacks for headphones and for connecting to othe MIDI equipment

I really am enjoying this horn. I’ve heard critics dismiss it as a toy but it’s really no dot much different from an electronic keyboard in principle. It’s just designed for wind players and I look forward to performing with it in the future. LOVE IT

As a professional player, I want to warn you to lower your expectations if you assume this can be your primary instrument. That is not the purpose of this horn. You can’t embellish your notes, dynamic contrast is challenging and glisses/shakes are not going to happen. Fast runs and large jumps (especially in jazz) can sound very muddy and are much harder than they should be. Trumpet sounds as well as other instruments sound as they would on a midi keyboard and won’t fool anyone. When not amplified, the overall volume is too weak to be heard in a band setting.

All that being said, the instrument can be really fun once you get the hang of it. It will take practice and coordination of your singing with the pitch you are trying to match. It is forgiving if you don’t match the pitch exactly as long as your valves match, but you need to be close. I see primary usage of this horn in a rock or funk band or tune where you are the only horn or a feature soloist. It’s a good way to add more variety and give your chops a break. There are more sound options than I expected. Along with the 22 default instruments, you can also harmonize by an octave higher or lower, making some instruments sound entirely different. Hooking this up to an amp really showed the potential of the horn.

    Pros
Fun to play, especially with a band where the horn is a good fit.
Saves chops for those really long, loud gigs.
Not too hard to switch to if you are already a skilled trumpet player.
The soprano sax, flute, and strings are my favorite sounds.
A simple keyboard amp is all you need to unlock the potential.
Long battery life, consisting of 4 AA batteries. You can also plug it in.
Can be hooked to headphones, working like a silent mute.

    Cons (for level expectations)
As a trumpet player, I’m probably being picky, but all of the trumpet sounds are awful to me. I’ll probably never use them.
Takes a bit of time to adjust thinking if you’re a brass musician.
Some instruments seem like a waste of space. Nothing against tuba or oboe, but why include those and not tenor sax or some dedicated electric guitar sounds? Thankfully by some with harmonies, you can come close to a tenor sax or electric guitar.
I wish I could add custom instruments. I see no need in adding music tracks, yet that is the only option for the midi connection.
I wish I could reorder the instrument list. If I’m playing soprano sax and want to jump to strings quickly, you have to press the Sound key 6 times to the right.
What I feel is a design flaw, I wish the panel was on the left side. That way, I don’t have to take my fingers of the valves in order to modify the sounds.
    Somewhat useless without external amplification.
No indication that the batteries are dying. Your horn will become harder to control as the batteries begin to fade. Then it will fail to produce sound at all. Stay plugged in to prevent embarrassing incidents.
My manual was completely in Japanese. Thankfully, I could find an official American manual online.

None of the cons are a deal breaker for me. It is worth the $700 plus tax I paid for it. It isn’t worth the $1500+ for a horn with limited usage in most bands.

The trumpet sound is great. It is greatly helping a person with Parkinson’s to continue preforming on the trumpet because he can no longer maintain a steady buzz. His ability as a lead vocalist helps with producing a good sound on th Yamaha EZ-TP.

Karen’s Husband Mark: i also lost my teeth, and been playing trumpet since 1960ish …as a studio player, recording, road musician, jazz player for sure..
I was able to transition to Hammond B3. BUT I missed the horn bigtime. After 10 or 15 years, THIS horn came to my attention.
I bought it. and it IS the answer. Like anything else, you can halfway play it, and it seems like a toy, but work with it..and
I can do everything I used to do, from bop to bigband or whatever, and it does the job. ***** Yamaha seriously should consider researching a little more on this and bring it back to availablity. I see potential sales bigtime. If you feel the need or the want…check Ebay. I got mine from Buy Japan too, but I’m not sure they still have any.
