YAMAHA THR10X Mini Guitar Amplifier With Cubase

I have been playing guitar for 20 years now and own a collection of various sized tube amps.
I play mostly harder rock.
Guitars used with this amp. Les Paul Slash model and a Ibanez with a J.B. in it.

I expected to be sending this back. But I was shocked at how good it sounds for what it is.

No cheap buzzy distortion that never changes.

It will respond to pick attack and volume knob levels like a real amp. Not quit as dynamic, but great for what it is.

It sounds pretty good playing back my Iphone. Everything is clear and smooth sounding.

The clean channel has nice depth to it and not at all flat or dead sounding.

The effects are a bit wonky in their setups for my taste. But you can download the software for free and change and save any parameter you want on this amp. So that is a really nice option.

I have logic on my mac so I will probably never use the recording software it came with. But it is a nice thing to include.

i bought this to have something really small and light AND great sounding when I go jam at other peoples house. It fits that bill perfectly.

I have tried every small amp on the market over the years to try and get a good tone and feel at low “quieter than TV” volumes.
None of them could really sound like a big stack but at low talking level volumes.
This Yamaha comes the closest by far.
I should mention it was never my goal to record with this amp since I have a studio setup that allows me to use larger and real tube amps .
I just wanted an amp with small speakers that was voiced to sound and feel like a big amp — miniaturized to very low levels —– imagine your favorite rock tone coming from a CD playing at low volume thru a small stereo — THAT is what I was always looking for.
Yamaha has achieved this here.

Perhaps the tones are a bit cloudy and muffled and not as clearly defined as the real thing, but for portable practice and other applications this is a winner
Why 4 stars ?

A few gripes …..
1) The military green looks great but they use a dull gold lettering that is almost impossible to read and will only be harder as the years pass by and these gold pigments fade even more as they are prone to do.

2) You need the Editor software to control all options which I don’t really mind – however there are only a few extra options (like mix and match speaker cab, gate, etc…) that are only available in the software — so it seems 4-5 extra controls on the panel would have solved this.

3) Only a few of the speaker cabs are usable — the others have too much of a harsh high end HISS and SIZZLE to them.

4) The sound differs slightly between headphone jack and monitoring with same headphones via the USB interface

5) Limited amps models — You basically have an Engle Powerball sound, the heavily saturated EVH Brown Sound , Clean Sound and a Solid State Metal Sound.
This covers most of the hard rock territory — but you have to dial out some of the oversaturation emulation in the BROWN models if you want a standard Marshall JCM800 type of rock tone that does not have the Variac induced mushiness of the Brown sound

So it would have been nice to see at least 2 more models
A straight up 80s-90s era Marshall JCM800 kind of thing and maybe a Mesa or similar.

The little amp does take pedals well, so this would have made it more versatile

I will find use for this out by the pool and other places I want a small portable low volume “stack” — BUT, I will not use it as much as I originally thought.

WHY ?

I discovered the Torpedo CAB that is a high end Cabinet Simulator using IR Cabinet Impulses that I can use with my REAL tube amps.
Thus when I am at home, I can now use my real amps instead of a simulation at super low volumes via the Torpedo Cab.
Of course this apprach is not portable – but it serves the purpose for much of my home practice

For portability and totally quiet practice thru headphones, I find I prefer the Zoom G3
The Zoom sounds better thru headphones than the Yamaha
It has built in drum patterns/metronome which is great for practice.
All the settings can be controlled from the front panel without a need for connection to a PC
The quality of the tone and touch response are comparable to the Yamaha on the “Marshall -like” models.
It is even smaller to fit in suitcase or briefcase when traveling, sitting in hotel rooms late at night, etc..
Of course the Zoom G3 does not have built in speakers like the Yamaha, but again this it not important for this application where you are doing headphone practice.

Fantastic amplifier, amazing rock and metal tones, and backing the gain off gets some great light crunchy tones too. definitely more versatile than I thought it would be.
I sold my POD HD 400 to buy this and don’t regret it, the THR10X is far more amp-like and responsive to play, in my opinion. Although I did have a few concerns it wouldn’t be loud enough given its small size, but its plenty loud enough for the home, its surprisingly loud for its size.
I often plug in my IPad through the line-in to play along with some tracks, its quite a good music player, but you might want to adjust the EQ on the playback device as this is a FRFR system.
Highly recommended !

I’m a tube amp guy so I was worried I would be very disappointed with this amp. I was very pleasantly surprised. The digital effects, as with all built in digital effects are fun, but not the greatest sounding effects (compared to spring reverb or pedals through a tube amp w/ effects loop). The built in amp sounds are really well done. The plug n’ play with computer is awesome and having tap tempo and a tuner built in is super handy. I also really love the ability to run my iPhone/iPod etc. straight in and independently control input lever of guitar and device at the same time. The best part is that you get all of these features and a great sounding amp that fits on top of your desk next to your computer. I can’t comment on durability or longevity yet, but my initial impression is that this amp deserves much of the hype it has gotten.
