I bought this to repot my Venus fly traps and to pack around the top of my orchids. My VFT are thriving. One star off for the sticks and thorns pulled out of the moss. I used about 10% of the package and pulled out about 10 random sticks and got stabbed by some briar type thorns. I’m sure it’s impossible to clean this out and make the moss affordable. Just be aware and I wouldn’t use it in an animal enclosure without sorting through it. I pulled off a chunk and soaked it in distilled water but when squeezing it out discovered the thorns the hard way …so be careful, don’t mindlessly squeeze out handfuls like I did. Other than that it seems very clean and high quality moss.

Good quality with minimal grass/sticks/dirt and long fibers. I do recommend doing a wash with neem oil to kill and fungus gnats eggs because they are almost unavoidable from this kind of product. But I do have one, slightly amusing but still concerned question about this product, why is there so much human hair in here?! It’s definitely human and strands of about 11 ish inches with a reddish blondish appearance (it’s definitely not mine or anyone else’s in my home) and it’s tangled up in the moss, almost as if the moss was growing on it. I’m slightly concerned for the whereabouts of a longhaired strawberry blond person in New Zealand.

I decided to go with the New Zealand option because I was a little wary of chemicals/heavy metals that might be in the cheaper Chinese product.

Wanted to try a little something different aesthetically but also to keep better moisture for when my snake sheds. Set up a moist zone and I was actually quite impressed with how this moss expanded and its texture. It holds a good even amount of moisture and although I have not yet needed to clean it yet, I can tell by the quality that it will indeed last awhile before needing to be replaced. So far I would recommend this product.

I bought this moss for my juvenile Leopard Gecko, Gallagher, to put in his little humid hide box. I used to use coconut substrate; which is uncomfortable to handle and doesn’t hold moisture very well but it was all I knew of to use. After discovering this I won’t use any other substrate for him. Sphagnum moss is so darn soft to touch/handle, holds moisture incredibly well, and a little goes a long way. I bought one package of this months ago and still have it for him. It isn’t as too messy and is very easy to clean up after. The moss doesn’t have that dirt odor like in the coconut substrate, and it’s smell is very mild. A super great aspect is that it doesn’t get moldy, or decompose. I can keep the same moss for AWHILE in his hide, the only reason I will change it is if he soils it (which I have not seen him do), or just to keep things fresh.

    PROS:
    Good sized package
    Very soft
    Holds moisture/humidity!
    Smell isn’t overwhelming
    Doesn’t get moldy/rotten
    Easy to clean up

    CONS:
    None I know of

Very pleased with this moss. It’s literally perfect for my little Gallywag, and I recommend to anyone who needs a moisture/humidity holding substrate.

I use this for my leopard geckos humid hide and to mix into my ball pythons substrate. It holds moisture well and lasts a while. It also is clean looking with no Sharpe pieces. I have bought this multiple times with no issues

This is the best quality I found on Amazon so far. There are cheaper options but the moss is not water retentive and u have to water very often which is time waste. This has no dyes or colors.

My moss started coming back to life after a month. It holds water like a sponge. I barely had to pick any sticks out. I have it in my paludarium and in with my carnivorous plants. Doesn’t have a chemical smell or any artificial coloring. No pests. 10/10 will buy again!

The quality of this spaghnum moss was much better than the one I purchased from home depot. This is softer, less branches/stems, better with water retention. One pack can make two 3 feet tall 6cm moss poles. I still had some left over. I am using my moss poles for monsteras and philodendrons. I don’t know if this will give better growth but I am more hopeful this time.

Great quality moss. Beautiful strands mostly and hardly any twigs. Expensive but it is still worth it. Plus good seller – some confusion with delivery updates but gets delivered finally

This is my product of choice.

I’m not sure what the difference is between sphagnum peat moss and sphagnum moss. Obviously the form. They’re the same plant and from different life cycles of the plant, but I looked for like an hour yesterday and couldn’t find anything to tell me what is better for water retention/humidity. What I WAS able to find were lots of reptile keepers who say they have a hard time keeping peat moss moist. While peat moss can absorb something like 40% times it’s weight in water, It sounds like retaining it might be an issue. But it appears people are using both.

That being said…. I’ve never used the peat moss, but in my experience with other types of moss New Zealand sphagnum holds more moisture and stays moist longer than the other types (usually marketed as terrarium moss or forest moss and they’re green). The terrarium moss is listed as being sphagnum, but in my experience it feels and acts differently.

In my higher humidity enclosures (I have some things that need 80+), I’m using a blend of eco earth, this sphagnum moss/dirt over barrier and a hydroball drainage layer. Then I’m using NZ Sphagnum moss in humid hides.

It works fantastic. I don’t have a single problem with complete sheds from my snakes, geckos or my indonesian blue tongue skink. I also use it in my isopod bins. I’ve never seen anything unusual in the bag – critters or things that aren’t supposed to be in there. It’s overall just a really great product.
