I’ve installed SSD’s before and have always been impressed at the difference in performance. This was the first time I’ve done it for a computer that was built in 2008….6 years old. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 1525. It didn’t get very good reviews when it was brand new. It had one 1GB of RAM, a 100GB hard drive and Windows Vista installed. Those are not very impressive stats, especially the Vista part. Boot up time took 1 minute and 10 seconds.
I installed 4GB of RAM ($34), the Kingston 60GB SSD ($49 at the time of purchase) and installed Linux Mint Maya 64bit. It now boots in 14 seconds. My customer is going to be super happy with this computer now. Libre Office programs start in 1.5 seconds. This 6 year old computer has been completely transformed with only $80 in upgrades.
I did see the poor ratings this hard drive had and was concerned about it, but took a chance anyway. It was a great purchase at a great price.

After an ugly experience with another brand, my search for another 60 GB solid state drive found this drive.
The pros:
+ Not overly expensive & the shipping was free.
+ Very good customer product reviews.
+ Simple installation… I used Casper 8.0 to clone my existing hard disk drive.
+ This drive works perfectly with a PATA (IDE) to SATA adapter.
+ Faster system boot.
The cons:
– More expensive than a hard disk drive of the same storage capacity.
– Only comes in SATA, so I had to use a PATA (IDE) to SATA adapter.
– The solid state drive access is so fast that the disk activity LED is nearly useless.
– Solid State Drives wear out over time, as each cell in a flash memory bank has a limited number of times it can be written and erased.
I don’t need a solid state drive, but I wanted to try one out. As I wrote earlier, my first experience with another brand turned out badly. The first one was DOA & the second one booted twice before giving me a “blue screen” & “disk read error”! After the second replacement, the seller offered to refund my money, which worked for me!
I always run multiple hard disk drives in my computers as a defense against Murphy’s Law. This 60 GB solid state drive will be my C: or boot drive.
As a backup, I left my old C: hard disk drive installed, but not connected. I figure if this solid state drive croaks, I can quickly reconnect the old hard disk drive. 🙂
I have an older motherboard, so I had to use this PATA (IDE) to SATA adapter:
SATA to IDE/PATA Converter Adapter (Covert SATA DVD Burner to IDE Interface Motherboard)
► Update – December 30, 2014
I have 2 of these now so I always have a cloned backup. For a low end s0lid state drive, these have given me zero problems! I like these enough to install the Kingston HyperX 3K, 240 GB solid state drives in our new gaming computer build. 🙂

The price was right and this small, 60GB, drive is perfect for using as a scratch drive for testing operating systems. (It would also be great to use for the system partition when you have a slow data hard drive.) The bench tests that I ran show a read speed of just under 280 MB/s with an access time of about 0.2 milliseconds. Yes, that’s 200 microseconds! I’ve used the drive for 2 months and it’s been perfect with no errors, no glitches, and top performance. I’ve tested it with Win7, Ubuntu, vmware player, and virtualbox using an Intel MB with Core2Duo processor.

Should wave off delivery charges for bulk purchase.

I use it as cache drive with a 500 gb hdd which was old and dying .Now my pc boots under 20 seconds. If you are on HDD’s ,changing to an SSD is the most cost effective way to improve performance. It has really made a huge difference for me.

I started using Kingston memory back in the early 90’s, and became a fan of their quality. Lately I’ve been using their SSD drives to build cheap Asterisk / voiSip phone systems. These systems run 24/7/365 and I’ve been very happy with the speed and reliability. The price is reasonable for the quality and capacity.
One of the things I really like about Kingston, is that they make every effort to maintain a standard spec throughout a product’s life. In other words, if you buy a memory module for your PC, then a year later buy another one to upgrade, they will match closely. Many other brands, tend to change specs, or substitute different chips on their memory modules. So they don’t match, and you get little glitches.
That consistency probably isn’t as critical when purchasing an SSD drive, but it does reveal a lot about Kingston’s commitment to quality and standards.
So if you’re looking for a quality SSD drive at a reasonable price, Kingston is a good choice.
Another good brand is Intel. They are crazy fast, very reliable, but a bit more expensive, and often out of stock when you want one.
Enjoy!

Looking to boost your performance without breaking the bank. The big name of Kingston to the rescue. I used these at work because of their cheap price. We replaced all of our spinning HD’s in our “millroom” where the impact of the machinery was causing such a vibration through the ground we were getting many failed spinning HD’s a month. This solved those problems without breaking the bank and saved us hundreds of repair hours.
Great product, great name, great price. Wish it came with a 3.5″ adapter though. I just hot glued them into the original Lenovo drive carrier and it works great.
