UPDATED REVIEW November 6, 2013
Great news! Since I just used one of my three installs on my original MS Home and Student Office, I installed one on my new Windows 8 computer. It installed fast and easy and in just about 10 minutes, I was up and running with MS Home And Office 2007. Yes, I know that this is the older version but it installs and works fine in Window 8! And I just opened some files from a flash drive that are from MS Office 2010 and 2013 (they were saved in DOC not DOCX) and every file opened great. Then I tried newer Excel files from a friends PC who has Windows 8 and uses 2013 and everything opened fine. Also she likes to save on DOC and XLS and not the X.
This for me is easier to learn than the OLDER 2003 version. Now that I have been using this software EVERYDAY, I have learned many shortcuts and tricks in it. And, I now give this software a 5 out of 5! I love the QUICK ACCESS TOOLBAR. On this toolbar, you can add the most often used items such as: NEW FILE, PRINT, MARGINS, FONT SIZE, etc. Now that I have just bought a new laptop, I also am using this software in it as well and now I am totally happy with this new MS OFFICE! Now, I have changed my review that I had last year as after working with this software, I now just love it! How time changes things!
THIS IS THE Jan 2008 REVIEW:
RIBBON was really different, but it is easy to learn. The main change is (if you do not change it) is when you save a file in the new OFFICE Word, for example, it saves the last name of the file to DOCX. The older OFFICE versions 97-2003 saved the last name of the file to DOC. So what happens if you do not do the simple steps that I will explain in this later, is that when you just SAVE a file in the new Word, the older WORD 97-2003 cannot read it. But great news, you can FIX this problem so that if you are like me, you go from the OLD OFFICE to the NEW OFFICE and then BACK TO THE OLD OFFICE AGAIN with files. So here is some helpful info to let you be able to work in the NEW OFFICE and then open up the file you saved in the NEW OFFICE to the OLD OFFICE: If you plan to read and write ANY OFFICE 2007 file and open it up to use later OFFICE 2003 (and even OFFICE 2002), this is what works wonderfully and allows you to use the OFFICE 2007 file in older OFFICE PROGRAMS from 1997 to 2003: While in OFFICE 2007, do this: go to the ROUND OFFICE button on the left, choose SAVE options, then choose SAVE AS OFFICE 97-OFFICE 2003. This allows you to save the file in the older OFFICE formats which each of the older OFFICE files end in the letters DOC for example the this file called VACATION-2006.DOC has this name because it was saved in the OLDER OFFICE(this is a older Word Document). (You want to do this step first as soon as you get the NEW OFFICE 2007 because if you do not do this, the program will save the last name file with the extension of DOCX and not DOC). The older Word 97-2003 can only read files that end in DOC, this is why you need to do this. Then later when you go to save a file in OFFICE 2007, go to the ROUND OFFICE BUTTON again. Choose SAVE AS. You then choose the SAVE AS OFFICE 97-2003. I have done this every time I work in OFFICE 2007 and need to open up an OFFICE 2007 file in OFFICE 2002 or 2003. Even with some of the newer features found in OFFICE 2007 such as the PICTURE FORMAT with the more border features, I have not had a problem at all when I save the file this way and then open it up in either OFFICE 2002 or OFFICE 2003. When you use EXCEL 2007, this procedure is done the exact same way. At first, I did not like the new OFFICE 2007. However, I found that after you click each area of the RIBBON, you quickly learn where everything is and is becomes easier and easier to learn. You know what helped me the most in OFFICE 2007? Right clicking my mouse for an INSTANT MENU. Then about 95% of the time, this INSTANT MENU gives me the feature that I need the most and is the quickest to use. However, I sat down and clicked each area of the RIBBON for about 15 minutes and then I learned the program. And I am a long time MS OFFICE user of many years. And using the right mouse key for an INSTANT MENU works great in ANY Windows program from OFFICE to Internet Explorer. The reason that I just gave this program a 3 and not a 5 is that I feel that the filing system should have kept the older DOC and not added the DOCX. However, this can be overcome, I know as I did the above steps and have opened MANY OFFICE 2007 files in my OLD OFFICE 2002 (and that is wonderful)!
UPDATE: August 2010 – Just purchased a new computer and installed the newer MS Office Home and Student 2010 and it is wonderful. Even better then the 2007 version. So the 2010 version is even a better choice.

First of all (and most importantly) I couldn’t believe the price! It is almost HALF of what it is currently offered anywhere else (WalMart, Best Buy, Microsoft.com all offer it for approx $150 and amazon.com has it for approx $85!). I was a little skeptical about buying it at such a reduced price. I was afraid that it didn’t include something that the other “full price” version had. I shouldn’t have even worried. It is EXACTLY the same product as others are selling! It’s amazing! I don’t think you’ll find a lower price anywhere else for this product!
OK. Enough of that. About the software. It is definitely an upgrade and Excel especially has a different look and feel to it, although I can’t see where there’s a whole lot of difference in the functionality. The formulas for Excel are all organized alot more neatly although the other buttons at the top seem to be more scattered. Word and PowerPoint are basically the same as the previous versions except they have been given the same “tabbed menu interface” that Excel is now sporting. The tabs are going to take some getting used to but I know that once I get used to it, I will like it alot better because when you click on the tabs, the options are more spread out and even give you word and picture descriptions of what task each button performs.
I have never used OneNote before, but it gives a very nice introduction once you open it up for the first time. It tells you all about what it does and even gives you some interactive examples on how to use it. I am currently going back to college to get another degree so this may help me with my notetaking (or help me with my lack of notetaking ability). Here is a brief statement that comes up when you open up the program for the first time:
OneNote is a place for gathering, organizing, searching, and sharing notes, clippings, thoughts, reference materials, and other information. All your notes will be visible here — organized by notebooks, sections, and pages.
Overall I like the look and feel of the 2007 Office version as compared to previous versions. I think the addition of the Microsoft OneNote is definitely a good one since this is the Office Home and Student Edition and most likely if you are looking to purchase this, you are a student.
