Edit: I’ve now had these speakers installed for almost 15 months, and they still sound incredible. I now have a Pioneer AVH-X2800BS with the EQ set on flat, going into a Clarion EQS-746 for EQ and pre-amp up to 7 volts, going into my Polk PA 330. This combo is working very well, as live tracks truly sound like being at the concert.

The bass that comes out of these speakers blows my mind. At times, it sounds like there’s a 10″ subwoofer hitting the low notes with precision, but it’s just these two 6×9’s (I have my rears turned off). These speakers are everything you’d want in a car stereo!

    * * * *

I’ve been using these for just over two months now. I have them set up with a Kenwood HD-458U head unit (http://amzn.to/1Myu4fc) and a Polk PA 330 (http://amzn.to/1MmyfHB) amp. The amplifier sends 100W RMS x 2, at 2 ohms, which is exactly the max these loudspeakers recommend. Although my head unit only has basic controls (bass, mid, treble, bass boost), I have still tweaked it to sound very good with these speakers.

I am running only these two speakers in my truck – I’ve turned off the rear speakers.

If you really want to get the most out of these speakers, I’d suggest getting a head unit with at least a 5-band parametric EQ, if not even a 10-band EQ. That’ll be my next upgrade, since my last head unit had a 5-band, and I was able to get even better results (with other speakers) with the sound tune.

    Sound Characteristics:

Bass – These speakers are strong enough to produce almost the amount of bass you’d get from a 10″ subwoofer. I used to load my vehicles up with subwoofers, but I now prefer SQ over SPL, and these full-range speakers are perfect for that. You’ll get rich mid-bass and deep bass frequencies form these JBL’s – enough to fill the cab of any car.

Mids – The mids are delicious, as shown when listening to Adele Live at Royal Albert Hall (http://amzn.to/1MmyH8K) or Jason Mraz Live: Tonight Not Again (http://amzn.to/1MmyJNQ). The singers’ voices just float up to your ears, as if you’re sitting in the front row. Vocal tones are rich and sonorous, although it really depends on how the source was recorded. Some tracks on Ed Sheeran’s + (http://amzn.to/20KJZNJ) make his voice sound a bit tinny, like it was recorded in a small barrel. These instances are by and large the exception, however.

Highs – A few reviewers mentioned setting the switch on the speakers to -3dB, but after testing, I kept mine on 0dB. I like the extra highs, and when tuned properly, it doesn’t induce the scratching in my left ear that my tinnitus will activate when I listen to things too loudly. The highs in these speakers are so clear and pronounced, that even though my speaker location is in the doors right next to the floor, the sound stage is lifted all the way up to my head. This makes for some fantastic listening.

    A True Loudspeaker

My last setup was an active crossover 3-way setup with Polk DB6501 components, and amped (50W RMS x 2) Pyramid W64 6.5″ bass drivers, driven by an Alpine CDA-9835 (27W RMS x 4) in 3-way mode. Although the SQ was better in that setup, the JBL GTO938’s are enjoyable in a different way. They add vibrancy to the music with their full-range capability.

These are truly an all-in-one solution for car audio, and if you’re willing to turn off the rear speakers and settle for just these loudspeakers up front (amped, of course), you’ll be very happy!

So I have been leasing vehicles every two years for the last 20 years or so. I usually order the top of the line sound system. I suppose the manufacturers have focused on improving the bass response at the cost of mids and highs over the last few years to suit the changing tastes of their customers. It is to the point where the side view mirrors bounce when you’re cranking – which is great – I dig jamming!

My latest ride is a 2015 Ram 1500 without the excellent optional Alpine sound system which for whatever reason was unavailable. The stock sound is still quite good, and plays loud so I am guessing their is some power in the stock amp, Unfortunately, the bass just over powers all the other frequencies no matter how you set the equalizer. Since I lease, I don’t want to throw a bunch of cash at the problem. The no-brainer move was to perform a simple speaker swap on the cheap. After reading reviews and checking specs I was looking for the biggest blow-out deal available and the $56 JBL GTO 938’s from Amazon were the perfect ticket for the front doors. These are the top of the line 6×9 triaxial car speaker from JBL, but are one generation away from their newest offering (GTO 939), so they are heavily discounted. Note, many of the other “series 8” JBL’s in other sizes are still available on their own website, so rest assured you’re not getting chopped liver.

The swap was simple and took about 2 hours with no glitches. I suggest using the speaker adapters from Metra, (72-6514 for me.) By the way, the factory speakers are lightweight coaxials with a paper domed tweeter. Also, YouTube is a great resource for installation. Anyway, these speakers clearly and cohesively balance and extend the mid’s and high’s. The depth, articulation and tightness of the bass also improved dramatically.

Next up were the factory 3.5″ dash speakers which are straight up lightweight single paper cone junk. I went with JL Audio C2-350x from Amazon and Metra connectors from Crutchfield. They were a little pricier than I expected, especially when adding the connectors, but the installation was so simple and fast I couldn’t resist. The resulting sharper imaging increases immediacy while reducing the compression in the highs. So for about $130 I am now in same league as the Alpine equipped Ram.

Next up is replacing the rear door 6×9’s to improve bass cohesiveness. I noticed the stock front door speakers played much louder than the stock rear door speakers indicating a difference in supplied power. I am considering coaxial JBL 928’s since I don’t need anymore mid and high extension and they too are being blown-out. The beauty of the whole scheme is I can easily pull the speakers when I turn in my car and if I don’t I’m out only $200. Well worth the investment!

By the way, I have a diverse taste in music but mainly dig on guitar jams. Some of my favs include metal like Slayer, jam bands like Gov’t Mule, classic rock like Van Halen and Skynyrd, Motown (cause I’ from the “D”), Progressive Rock like Dream Theater, hot chick singers like Amy Whinehouse, jazz like Theonius Monk. There is plenty more but sorry, no Hip Hop or Rap. Also, I have been into home hi-fi gear for years and currently have about 10 grand invested in a constantly evolving home theater which I use to play concert DVD’s and stream hi-res audio and video.

i bought the JBL GX963 300W 6″ X 9″ 3-Way GX Series Coaxial Car Loudspeakers from amazon for around $90 and they were a big upgrade from the OEM in my 2015 Jeep Cherokee KL – but they delivered very little bass even playing with the levels. So I went for these for the back doors and they def deliver a noticeable amount of bass that will shake your car and you’ll feel it in the seat. I would skip the GX963 and spend the extra money. I’m sending back the GX963 and getting another pair of these.

That said, I def had to cut the plastic molding inside the door to make room for the extra width of these speakers. But it was really easy and each side was cut with a serrated shop knife in 2 minutes. Again, for my 2015 Jeep Cherokee. Make sure you get the little connectors to make the wire hook up a breeze.

Also, if you’re not brave about removing the liners and doing these yourself, it was really very easy. Theres tons of youtube videos. The liners had 3 small screws, popped off and popped back in. Total time to unmount, cut the molding, change the speaker, and remount the liner was 5 minutes each side – and that corrected 10 years of bad sound in my car.

Ive installed these in my car & have my gains on the amp turned down
They are paired with hertz 6.5 component speakers
There has ben no issues with the hertz speakers but one jbl is completely blown and the other the voice coil is scratchy
Ive had competition car stereo equipment in previous cars which were thrashed to death with no issues and these JBL speakers were never pushed hard
    Pretty disappointed
