As a commercial photographer, I need vast amounts of storage. I’ve used LaCie mirrored RAIDs for fifteen years, and It has been a love-hate relationship from the beginning. I am finally done. Nothing has ever worked out of the box. Every drive, from the first to the last requires hours of firmware updates, software, troubleshooting, etc. If you call tech support, they blame Apple… Apple blames LaCie… and nothing gets resolved. I am trying to rid myself of the older, slower drives with low capacity in favor or larger, faster drives. I purchased this 40TB beast, which (technically) would give me 20TB of mirrored storage… if the drive actually worked. After a day of trying everything, including multiple computers, multiple USB-C cables, downloading the latest LaCie RAID Manager software and trying to update the drive’s firmware… nothing, nada, zilch. The drive powers up, but is never recognized by the computers. If you are looking for a $1,600 blinking blue nightlight, this is the drive for you! If, however, you want a simple solution for large, safe storage, but anything else. LaCie is to drives what McDonalds is to hamburgers… they are the most well known to consumers and they make a lot of them!.. but they suck!

It’s compact, high-capacity, and ya know, a RAID. Reasonably fast.

12.23.2020: Just a quick warning. LaCie 2big RAID 8TB is not a Thunderbolt3 device. Its USB 3.X only.
Also, it has ***no built-in encryption.*** which is very surprising.
I had trouble on install. The RAID Manager would not install on my brand new DELL XP15 9500. I had to use an older Windows 10 computer to set up RAID 1.
So far the HDD is quiet when not reading or writing, with some minor noise when reading and writing but not an issue at all. Fan noise is not noticeable.
Will update review as necessary.

Purchased this device on June 23rd, showed up on June 29th which is great not being shipped and sold from Amazon, so awesome job to the company (iSanek) for being quick on the shipping. Device showed up brand new, sealed box and packaged quite well both by LaCie as well as iSanek. Opened up package to notice a bunch of little scratches and dings.. not impressed with that as it’s a brand new item but I’ll deal with it. Color is pretty awesome. Nice dark grey and looks great on the desk. The lights on the front aren’t that bright but there is a function to turn the lights off on the front of device on the LaCie manager which is a bonus because a lot of reviewers on YouTube and here stated it was too bright. Setting the device up was very easy, one issue with the LaCie health download as it wouldn’t let me finish that.. I’ll figure that out down the road. The speed was pretty quick roughly a 235 read and 225 write, that is in Raid 1 with the supplied USB C to USB C.. in raid 0 you would get roughly double that speed. Little disappointed with the actual storage of it as it states 4TB and you only get 3.6TB in raid 1. I feel like 10% loss is quite significant and it should be within 5% if I had to nitpick at something. Overall I’m satisfied with the drive. Hopefully the old rumours about Seagate being awful isn’t correct and these last a long time. This is my first ever external hard drive.

Video-editor here. Using this on RAID-0 and this thing gets noisy as hell when scrubbing footage or rendering. I can barely drown out the noise with my speakers. Also seems to easily bottle neck. Takes forever to transfer a file to the disk while it’s also busy exporting something, for example.
I should have gone with a Pegasus RAID

using as Raid1, to backup photos + art work for PC & Mac. Easy setup, no issues. Unit is very quiet, no high pitched whining or vibration.

In 2 years and 3 months. I am on my 2nd replacement. An 8Tb External drive that cost $400. At each replacement, I am pulling teeth AND I have an extended warranty. They only give refurbished machines as replacements. The 1st replacement required an additional fee for them to send me the replacement first. Now at the 2nd replacement, it’s “honestly impossible” for them to do the exact same procedure they did 7 months ago. I am of the mind that companies should stand behind their products and fall over themselves trying to make things right when than go wrong. Of course, technology has fails so do the right thing. SEAGATE, I did my due diligence buying the warranty. Still you want to block and make – losing your data- a very unnerving event more, and more, difficult.

‘The specs on the box say this will work with “latest version of macOS 10.12 or later’ – but It would not work with my mac OS 13.4 and after days on the phone to its Support line and Apple Support to seek a firmware update/fix the LacCie support admitted it would not work on my OS and there was no fix yet available to make the claims made on the box true. Had to return the product.

Works well, silent, reliable, easy to set up. The manual an instructions are poor and defective, this is a point to improve.
I use in RAID 1 configuration with ExFAT file system.

I’ve put the contents of 12 older externals + backed up my iMac on here and. Still have 90% open space! Excellent value for the cost.

It’s a noisy drive. Even when not directly accessing. It’s fans and discs run loud. I would suggest mounting it behind or below the desk. Having it on the desktop is audible.
That being said , I work with music and use it to directly access stored shoots and work directly from the drive in Capture one and Photoshop. It’s worth the extra money for the 440mb/s read write speed.

I bought this LaCie drive so that I could use my new work laptop (Dell XPS9500) for my personal use….I keep my photography and all personal items on this LaCie drive in Raid1 configuration to keep it backed up.
The good – This drive works fast even in Raid1 config. The unit is well built, and looks good on my desk.
The Bad – The blue LED on the front is unnecessarily bright. Also, sometimes when I click on file explorer the drive can be slow to wake up and allow me to access it. Also, for some bizarre reason when I turn the computer off or even put it in sleep mode the LaCie drive doesn’t always go to sleep. I came in one morning to my office and the drive was warm to the touch from spinning all night.
Lastly, this drive is pretty expensive for what it is. I really don’t think a chassis with two enterprise drives should be over $500
