I needed a new power strip for my home theater after adding a HTPC. I was previously using an old Monster PowerCenter HTS 2000 that I got for free several years ago and an APC office surge strip. I did a lot of research on various power centers, conditioners from Belkin, Panamax, Monster, Furman, APC and more. After encountering a lot of the same bizarre pseudo science and hand-waving one encounters in audiophilia and consulting with a couple of A/V professionals (not salespeople) I decided to skip that whole thing and just get a really high quality surge protector.
I’ve seen Tripp-Lite surge protectors in server rooms and IT workbenches for years and the form factor was appealing because it’s about the most compact way to connect that many devices and still have room for all the various power bricks and adapters. So I took a chance and ordered this. I nearly got the 24-outlet

but I came back to my senses once I realized that my A/V rack is 48″ wide and the larger version is a full six feet long.
In use it’s actually very convenient to be able to group power plugs with all the space you have. I’m using 9 of the outlets now. As far as my sound and picture it’s the same as when I used my fancy Monster strip which is exactly what I expected.
My one caveat with this thing is that it’s not very friendly to home environments if you’re concerned about hiding it. It’s a full 4 feet long, the power cord is black and very thick. It works great behind a piece of furniture and the shape means it takes up less space than “side by side” models.

This is a reputable brand with good surge protection, and the design is rugged and built for much harsher commercial environments than a home gaming desk. However, due to the good spacing between plugs which allows for larger bricks, as well as the metal casing and compact height & depth, this was a perfect solution for the back panel of a SecretLabs Magnus Pro desk. I am confident that my electronics are well protected and that the heat will effectively dissipate. Note: This fits the smaller size desk but would also fit the larger desk very well. In the smaller desk, it is a little longer than the space between openings, so it will hang over an opening a bit. It was still the best option among many I reviewed and will allow you to plug in the most devices with large transformers.

I ordered two Tripp Lite 12 Outlet Power Strip with Surge Protection (model SS3612) and mounted them to the underside of the computer desks my wife and I have in our home office.
I am VERY impressed with the quality of these power strips. They feel much sturdier than the “cheapo” power strips you find at every big box store. Some of the things I love are:
• Their appearance exudes quality. They’d be right at home in a laboratory full of expensive instruments. Since they look so good, I don’t feel like it’s so important to hide them.
• They’re narrow and low profile. I don’t think these could be made any smaller given the size of a NEMA 5-15 plug.
• The electrical receptacles are mounted solidly in the strip and grab both plugs and “wall wart” transformers securely, even upside down.
• The 12 receptacles give you tons of options for plugging in all kinds of equipment.
• The power cord is a generous 15 feet long. That gives you plenty of length to route it inconspicuously around a desk to a wall receptacle.
• There’s a green LED on the front near the power switch that confirms the surge protection is still operational.
I had a good feeling about these power strips before I ordered them, but I have to say my high expectations were thoroughly exceeded! These are truly excellent.
I also have to say that Tripp Lite has top-notch customer service. One of the power strips I ordered was missing the two spring clips needed for mounting. I contacted Tripp Lite about the issue through their website. Within 3 days I had a box of new clips waiting on my front porch!
That kind of customer service is rare and extremely valuable. I’ve put Tripp Lite on my personal “preferred vendor” list!

Ask electricians and contractors. Tripp Lite is simply top of the line. Converting my basement into a music studio required lots of outlets. These long strips provide a safe source of electricity anywhere in the room with good surge protection as well. Unlike their unsightly cousins these strips are unobtrusive and professional looking. Made of sturdy metal, I expect a long life of excellent service.
